Gawd yes, have you seen the instructions they’re issuing now about washing hands – a “10/20 rule” or something? And the ads for hand disinfectants cropping up everywhere, about touching escalator rails, shopping trolleys … Egad.
There are more bare midriffs to be seen on the street these days (including the very pregnant ones!) than the average person would see at a sports game event, surely! All sounds like more cotton-wool daftness.
I may be completely off-base here, knowing nothing about the GA, but when I read the article I thought they were talking about cheerleaders in high school. They mentioned that the US has had a rule change for high school cheerleading groups, and since the article kept referring to “girls” I assumed they were discussing teenagers. And there is just way too much skin being shown in high schools these days, in my opinion and in the opinion of many teachers I know. Cheerleaders have always been considered sexy, even when they wore long sleeved sweaters and only showed a bit of leg (and the ocassional team-color-covered bottom) so I don’t think covering up their tummies is going to hurt them much. And since many, many of the young girls I see on a daily basis are exposing not a trim, tight belly but a pudgy roll, I don’t think the eating disorder argument works, either.
Yes! Jeeeeeeeeeeez it is beginning to look like we all should be “bubble boy”!
Honestly how PARANOID is society becoming! I did a First Aid course last weekend, lesson number ONE? Ensure your own safety! Wear gloves etc. So some poor bastard is DYING on the street and I have to look for gloves so I don’t catch some disease carried by blood. The main message seemed to be EVERY BUGGER COULD KILL YOU, CONSIDER IF THEY ARE WORTH SAVING (of course they are if you have gloves)!
I had a girlfriend who was a competitive chederleader. There is nothing about their midriffs that would inspire anorexia. They usually have stomachs like wrestlers, or gymnasts.
Definitely a good point. Also, does body size predispose one to develop an eating disorder? Are girls who end up becoming anorexic or bullimic more likely to be overweight before they get into the whole eating disorder scene? I’ve never actually heard anything about this; while obviously folks who have eating disorders have unrealistic body images, it would be interesting to learn whether they were average weight or not before they became ill.
I have this secret fantasy where public policy is based upon evidence and rational discussion of the issues rather than bizarre beliefs like this one. But I bet a lot of the supporters were just people who thought the little sluts should cover up before they caused the boys to start down the path of self-abuse.
