Automatic downloads

Thank you.

For anyone else seeing this issue, please let us know what operating system you are using and how you are accessing the SDMB (firefox, chrome, opera, tapatalk, android browser, etc) and what version.

And again, screen shots and any additional info are all helpful.

Thanks.

God I’m sorry for the slow info. I should know better, always post all relevant data right out of the gate. I was too busy being a putz. ( insert Orthodox Jewish emoji here )

Mac OSX Yosemite- 10.10.5

Accessing always using Firefox Ver: 48.0.2

I am not sure why I ought to be doing your troubleshooting for you but this is getting really freaking old.

Anyway:

On my home Windows 7 machine:
Win 7 Home Premium SP 1
All the latest updates are installed

On my personal cell
HTC One m9
Andriod v 6, securit patch 8/1/2016
Chrome version 52.0.27743.98

My work laptop
Windows 7 Pro SP1
All latest updates installed

Chrome version 52.0.2743.116 m

Work cell
HTC One M9
Andriod v 6, securit patch 8/1/2016
Chrome version 52.0.27743.98

I have tested this at home and at work on a throwaway Windows 2008 servers using IE and a 2012 servers running IE. All have the same thing happen.

The url for the popup that comes right before the download message has a.productmsg.com url. The present url has cdm=xads.zedo.com in it along with a crapload of other stuff, probably referal codes.

I do not understand why this is taking so long to address. I do this sort of stuff for a living and if any of the companies I have worked for had this problem, it would have taken a day at most to shut off the ads until the underlying problem was found.

The response to this problem is ridiculous.

No, it’s not. It’s profit-centric, not service-centric. See my post above.

The SDMB is owned by a company that wants to make as much money per click of ours as it possibly can. We all understand that intellectually but emotionally are a wee tad chafed at the concept.

Me, I’m chafed that the owners of SDMB are loading up pop-ups that are downloading things ONTO my computer that can NOT be blocked.

Don’t be waiting up nights for this to be resolved. You’ll get tired and cranky.

If Fighting Ignorance were really what the SDMB was about, this kind of thing wouldn’t be happening.

Just to add a data point I always use several layers of add blocking and don’t have any issues with the SDMB or the main page but I rarely visit from a phone.

I was at my parents house the other night and logged in from my mom’s iMac though. Holy shit. I was hit with modal ad windows, auto-playing videos, downloads in progress and so many ads I could barely find the content of the boards underneath it all. Almost every thread I loaded would result in some very undesireable behavior or another happening immediately.

It served as a good reminder to install an adblocker on her computer but man, that’s what a new visitor here sees upon arrival and it’s ugly. Someone like my mom isn’t going to spend time compiling a report of the details. She is probably going to click that urgent update notice blinking in her face and get malware instead of recognizing it for what it is.

I didn’t gather any pertinent details about which ads or from what service. It doesn’t matter because whack-a-mole is a game the bad actors will always win. They have more time to devote to it than I do.

This was an iMac with the latest Mac OS and in both Safari and Firefox.

It is not profit-centric to run off your customers by doing this sort of shit. I come here quite a bit less due to this problem. Less visits = less impressions = less money.

At this point I won’t recommend the site to others and visit less often. It is almost to the point of ‘Fuck it, place has gone to shit and the management doesn’t give a damned so why even bother coming back?’.

Pretty sure no one is going to try and convince to find a new point of view, but this board exists because it’s The Dope. We often hear people asking where they can find another site like this, and the answer is always the same. There isn’t one. We can’t help what our Chicago Overlords (I kid, I kid.) have to do to keep this place working. We certainly can’t do it ourselves. If you can find happiness somewhere else, then your bliss is my blessing. I kind of like it here.

As a paid poster I get a teeny-tiny fraction of a cent per word. Doesn’t amount to much, but I appreciate the sentiment.

Course you have people like the pizza dude who milk the system.:frowning:

I’m sorry, Paid Poster?

At some point it becomes not only right but necessary to report the SDMB to the search engines’ malware blacklists.

You know, when a kayaker gets up a good head of steam, he can make a pretty loud whooshing sound.

You think I’ve made [del] 22,784 [/del] 22,785 posts on my own dime?

THAT was hilarious.
