Pretty much exactly where I sit. I never opposed them back in the day, never argued for them. For me they neither add nor subtract value. I simply don’t care and too date can’t be bothered. That might change tomorrow. Or, I dunno, maybe in 2023.

I had no opinion on the old board–those who used them, that was great; those of us who didn’t, no problem.
But here on Discourse, I find them handy. The “Recent Posts” on the main page shows the avatars, and I can recognize them, making it easier to follow particular posters. Plus, it’s interesting to see how posters choose to portray themselves.

I could never understand people that thought avatars were going to be huge animated gifs. Admittedly, I don’t read many message boards but I never saw one with avatars that were anything but like we have here. The flashing gifs seemed to be reserved for signatures only.
It’s funny to see how many were against them in those threads that have an avatar next to their names.
There’s a 2 click rule on this board for a reason!

The avatars have been fairly modest. The trouble now are the motion emojis and large photos people (somehow) post. Also posts with no information or even no words at all, just a photo or YouTube link.

It is. It came from a thread in which we were supposed to give a description of our Board names. I hadn’t thought about it before, just that I’m nuts about cars. But then I had inspiration that carnuts are those little bits of cereal and other foods that fall to the floor of cars, especially cars with tiny human passengers. Therefore, Froot Loops.
