Avatar is getting 3 sequels? Wha??

I liked Avatar, and have not seen it in 3D. However, story-wise, I see absolutely no reason whatsoever for a sequel or three.

I think that might have something to do with $$$.

As far as the story there were no memorable characters (I couldn’t name a single one from memory, though would recognize a few of them if I read them). I couldn’t even name the planet without a hint at this point.

Because those people were female. Girlfriend, at the time, and her friends saw it three times in the theaters. I still have not seen Titanic.

Because it seems to me that what moviegoers *really *want to see, is movies directed by James Cameron.

I could never get her to watch Abyss or Aliens.

I was a teenager when Titanic came out and one of my male friends saw it 11 times in the theater. He could have been lying, but why would you make up something like that?

Here’s my idea: The first sequel begins a couple of years after the first movie. Sully and the Navi girl (don’t care to look up her name) are trying to start a family, which is important for her, but she isn’t getting pregnant. This is causing stress in their relationship. Looking for answers, Sully goes back to the human base. Besides himself, two humans were allowed to stay: the other avatar guy (whose avatar was killed during the final battle) and the Indian tech guy. When Sully arrives, he finds only the tech guy. It turns out that Other Avatar Guy killed himself because he couldn’t stand the lonliness and isolation. (Remember, humans can’t breathe the air on Pandora, so these guys would be stuck in/around the base for the rest of their lives.) Sully finds out from the tech guy that the avatars are sterile. The humans who planned the project weren’t idiots; they knew what sort of hijinks might occur, so they made sure that there wouldn’t be any unexpected avatar babies running around.

This would provide some internal conflict, as Sully would have to deal with the fact that can never give his girl the family she wants. I’d have the main threat be aliens (non-humans, that is). We could save the Revenge of the Humans for a later sequel.

That is an interesting idea, though personally I don’t like watching family/relationship conflicts like that in movies so I hope Cameron doesn’t go that route (or at least make it the central focus of the movie)

And count me as someone who enjoyed Avatar, thought it was decent but not great. I never understood the fascination for Pandora, sure its pretty and well realised but its really only a flourescent Earth jungle. That and the ‘bad humans - noble aliens’ theme irritated me as well.

I’m a guy, and I saw it twice in the theaters myself. The first half was a perfectly decent costume drama, and the second was a great action movie. What’s not to like?

Movie production companies are ALWAYS overly optimistic about sequels, reality AKA money will determine whether it comes true or not.

I mean… Honestly; given how assholish Earthlings are generally portrayed as being in the movie, there is only one end I can imagine for the whole story: X years after the events of “Avatar” Earth sends a big fleet to Pandora, nukes the whole wretched place and those uppity smurfs to smithereens and strip-mines what remains to its heart’s content.

They can’t do that though - they need Unobtainium in order to get to the Unobtanium - it’s like when you need your glasses to find your glasses.

I could probably be wooed back into the theatre to see a sequel set in the same Avatar universe since that was the most intersting part but they’d have to have a new story line and scrap all the current characters and actors.

It* is* interesting that some of the most “romantic” films are when the female protagonist is cheating. But never when the man is cheating.

I wouldn’t say that Rose was cheating in Titanic. Her engagement to the rich dude was arranged-- She never had a say in it. Ditching him for another guy might piss off her parents, but she’s not backing out on any commitment she herself made.

Disney is about to do a big expansion to their Animal Kingdom park called “Avatarland.” They need it to be a big franchise to justify it all.
