Wow. Wow. Wow. I love me some James Cameron. I love me some giant robots. I have no particular ill-will towards blue-skinned freaky natives. Bring it on!

Wow. Wow. Wow. I love me some James Cameron. I love me some giant robots. I have no particular ill-will towards blue-skinned freaky natives. Bring it on!
Until yesterday, the only thing I knew about Avatar was that James Cameron had been working on it for-freaking-ever. then I read a blurb in EW that said something to the effect of: when he first brought it to the F/X guys, they said it couldn’t be done. So, he waited, and now it can be done. I thought, “come on, really? not ‘would be expensive’ or ‘couldn’t be perfect’, but 'could not be done? what could that possibly be?”
Now I know. . That looked freaking awesome.
I was underwhelmed (to say the least). We’ve been hearing for months that this would be groundbreaking CGI, that it would blow the pants off of anything we’ve seen before. But I saw better war scenes in “District 9,” better character animation in LOTR, and more interesting and evocative alien/ creature designs in both. The helicopters were kinda cool, but overall… meh.
Oddly enough, I did like that moment where the guy cocks a half-smile after seeing the avatar in the tank - pretty much the only non-CGI moment in the trailer!
Just saw the trailer. It blew me outa my socks. The technology is wonderful and convinces me that we can at last do justice to all those incredible worlds that the great sf novelists have imagined.
I cannot wait to see this.
Good lord. I just read about the film’s tedious and obvious premise and my only response is spare me the self-righteous bullscheisse. There’s not enough  in the world for this one.
Somebody needs a hug!
Provided it’s not from space elves who are “more evolved” than humans and live in harmony with their environment which is superior to space-adventuring humans, I’m OK with it.
It’s spectacular, way bigger than I had anticipated!
I can’t judge it solely from this teaser, but I can see why it might get some anti-digital-looking backlash.
Looks neat. I’m a sucker for space opera so I’ll watch, but what’s there that couldn’t be done until now? The aliens are FAR from the best-looking cgi I’ve seen, even if you set the bar back a few years.
The aliens don’t look all that amazing (still well done though) but everything else, especially the landscapes, look spectacular.
I’ll admit, the trailer -looks- nice, but I’m warry of any trailer that focuses so much on… Well, not telling us much.
Also… Yeah. Space elves, it appears. Comes off as a bit of a tired cliche now moved to sci-fi / another planet from it’s usual home of fantasy films.
So Cameron is the last airbender?
Well it’s a teaser, not really trailer. Not really meant to tell us anything.
What is Avatar? I know absoultely nothing about it and that trailer looked very meh to me on its own.
James Cameron, director of many notable films that start with the letter “T”, freshly returned from his recent personal quest to find Jesus (he was in the basement), has been given hundreds of millions of dollars to masturbate in CGI.*
He has been talking for some time about how this will be the…no, wait, let me look it up…“coolest film ever made”, and how it will “blow you to the back wall of the theatre in a way you haven’t seen for a long time”. I take this last to mean that it will be very loud; possibly the bass-laden thrum that serves as the trailer’s soundtrack will continue to increase in intensity throughout the length of the film, concluding with precisely-timed dissonance shockwaves that will reduce any remaining portion of the audience to paste. (Admittedly, that would be pretty cool.)
Because of this, many people, myself included have been wondering just what this magnum opus to end all magna opera was going to comprise. Judging by the trailer, it seems to be a shiny CG sci-fi/fantasy action flick with blue people. Given my love of all things RealD (no irony there; Beowulf rocked), I’ll probably see it just for the eye-candy factor; movie-wise, I expect to prefer District 9.
*ETA: Just to be clear, I actually quite like James Cameron, even his films that do not begin with “T”. I mock because I love.
If this were just another no-name film, I wouldn’t think twice, but since this is the “10 years in the making,” “we had to invent an entirely new way of making films to make this one,” “takes CG into truly new territory” etc. Avatar, I have to say that I’m absolutely underwhelmed. It’s not bad, but it looks very generic and a lot of the CG looks very “early 00’s.”
It looks like something that Blizzard would take 10 years to do. Except with Blizzard, you get a game to play too.
I appreciate the ambition, and I imagine the attention to detail is impressive, but it looks like the movie itself will be terrible.
I changed my mind. This is gonna suck. Just realized Michelle Rodriguez is in it.
Remember this film is designed to be viewed in 3D.
Not that that is any excuse for anything shoddy, but it may explain his building it up to be something that will make your eyeballs explode.
I’ve been waiting a looong time to finally have a look at this. And, it’s about what I expected, but I was hoping for something unexpected.
I’m a shill for Cameron, and I don’t think he has made a perfect film yet. He’s a director with a lot of passion. Wants to fill his audience with the same sense of awe he has, sometimes to a fault. But when it works, it’s magic.
He’s also a filmmaker that pushes the envelope on filmmaking. He’s an innovator, and on this one, most of the innovation was how he made the movie, which should have transparent effect on the result.
Also, I expect the visuals to make more sense in 3D.
In the end, it always comes down to story, and he’s had more hits than misses. Here’s hoping!
(FWIW, I also loved that smile by Sam Worthington)
