I think he means apologizing to Eywa/the animal itself for the necessity of the hunt.
I didn’t realize there was something wrong with them until a bit into the movie, and by then I didn’t feel like getting up and bothering everyone around me.
Yeah, but think what they could do with agriculture! And cities! They could build their own spaceships and come to Earth and try to take minerals from us!
Nuke 'em, now, while we can.
I like that idea. “Hey, I remember 10,000 years ago my Na’vi tried to rebel, I better keep them down with some spiritual BS. Whereas these humans have shown their acceptance of me as a big server and think it’s sort of cool, I think I’ll save them instead.”
Can’t remember, but I’m pretty sure it cropped up more than just the once, because that’s one of the things that annoyed me about it.
One thing I forgot to say… Stephen Lang’s performance in this movie was outstanding. We’ve seen the grizzled, war-torn, hard-assed military leader type many times before in other movies, but I can’t think of one that pulled it off quite so consistently well.
I don’t think so. I’ve seen it twice and only remember that one time. I will be sure to listen closely and note if you’re right and I’m wrong the next time I see it.
Congratulations to Avatar for winning Best Director and Best Picture (Drama) at the Golden Globes!
It was definitely the best Duke Nukem impression I’ve ever seen.
You’re goddamned right he ordered the Code Red!
On the food question, come to think of it, there’s also the scene where the pilot breaks the scientists out of the brig. Her line to distract the guards was something like “I don’t think these treehuggers deserve steak”, which along with their reaction suggests that steak does exist on Pandora, but it’s pretty uncommon.
It might have been twice in fairly short order - i.e. “this sparkly hoverstone is unobtainium … <some more dialogue, pan to follow the characters to the holographic display> … This big-ass tree is right on top of a rich vein of unobtanium”
So what are everyone’s final box office predictions? It’s already at $1.6B worldwide and $491M domestic… I remember reading articles after the 2nd week or so saying how it was “highly unlikely” that it would pass Titanic, which after the 3rd/4th week went to it being a “possibility” and now it seems almost a sure thing. I’m going for $2.5B worldwide and $750M domestic.
Saw it last night-and I was impressed! By the end, those alien chicks were looking pretty hot!
That said, isn’t this movie just “Dances With Wolves” updated to 2154? The Na’vi language sounds a lot like the lakota (did Cameron copy it?), and the whole meme “Americans bad”/ “native people good” is getting a bit tired.
Incidentally, that weaselly general manager-was he taken from Alien II? Same behavior-the businessman concerned with money and nothing elese.
Yeah, but Sigourney never strips down to her underwear 9as in Alien II?).
Why are people smoking in 2154? Cigs probably are $1200/pack by then!
Well obviously that’s why they need the unobtanium. To fund their habits.
I didn’t think it would, but now it looks like it will. Definitely Worldwide, it’ll pass Titanic in a couple of weeks. Domestic is still iffy, I think. If it keeps up its current pace over the next few weeks it will. If it starts dropping off it may not. I wouldn’t want to try and predict the final totals, but I’ll be interested in seeing if yours come close.
They were never identified as Americans, but even if they were, there were a bunch of them who helped the Na’vi, so they weren’t all bad. Plus, the Na’vi weren’t all good. They were all set to kill Jakesully until he said he was a warrior. If the avatar had been his brother the scientist, he’d a been a goner.
…I met a man once who grew up in the rain forests in Puerto Rico. He lived in a very remote place until he was a grown man and left home to join the military. He spoke to me of a lagoon where there were billions of phosphorescent microorganisms living in the water and the whole lagoon would be glowing at night. The natives would strip naked and swim amongst the organisms and he said you could feel this vibration coming from them that was healing. He said later as he was older, some of the “outsiders” had found a way into the remote areas and found the lagoon. He said they would swim and splash around in there in their shorts or swimming suits. He said the chemicals in the clothing, and from their body lotions, deodorants, and shampoos, plus their un-reverent behaviour in the water killed off the organisms…’
This is a metaphor of what the narrative of the film Avatar suggests to me,…this is why it hits so deep and with so many.
It is closer in narrative to ‘Dances with Wolves’,…with a deep inner message that not everyone will resonate with.
In truth, it could be our own planet,…and our own history… with the colonising of indiginous lands. I recon the few South American tribes still in exsistance, the few bushmen or abboriginies left to unwanted land are represented in the N’avi.
The Western world is represented very well, especially with the separation of the shareholders of coporations being 6 light years away. So similar to our current way of living where people making decisions are far removed from the outcome.
The few words in the film which suggest more the devolution of modern man,…
‘You are like a baby, dont know where you are…!’ & ‘There is no green in their world, they killed their mother…!’
…Highlights a different perspective from Hollywood like a breath of fresh air,…unlike the usual messages emminating from the studios which tend to be quite shallow, focused more on entertainment rather than the sharing of wisdom.
Here at least there is a suggestion for us all to awaken and look through different eyes…
The film suggests also that there is a lot more beyond the 5 senses of awareness, if we just take the time to stop, look and listen.

Avatar is “Dances with Smurfs,” a phrase I only wish I’d coined.
It’s “Dances with Wolves” redux, but the Indians are blue.
The longing for life with the noble savage is age-old, silly, shallow, saccharin and ignorant.
It’s not as if we don’t have noble savages right here, right now. South America abounds with them. Go! Live with them! I don’t mean vacation or tour. I mean, settle in, reside. Stay.
Then you’ll learn real nostalgia: for post-industrial civilization.

“Smurfahontas” - they’re all calling it here.
