Avatar Trailer

I saw Up in 3D and have been decidedly nonplussed by the technology.

What I am interested in seeing is some sort of new sound tech that they are supposed to be unveiling with the release of the film.

I had heard the animation was so amazing, screening audiences couldn’t tell the CG from the real stuff.

Then I saw the trailer.

The night elves from World of Warcraft have more animation and better physics in-game than they do in this trailer.

Really disappointed, I wanted to be blown away.

So is this going to be released on both Xbox 360 and PS3?

That’s what I was thinking. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but now that you mention it, they do look like retarded Night Elves.

I’m looking at Night Elves and I sort of see it, but not anymore than I see a resemblance to any other elf in any other high fantasy concept.

I honestly thought this was about Avatar: The Last Airbender because I had heard a movie was being made and had no idea that Cameron was making a movie with a similar title so as I was watching the trailer I was thinking, marines? WTF?, ok maybe they represent the Fire nation. In space? WTF?, ok I guess. Giant blue people? WTF?, ok maybe those are the Water nation. Then the two are attacking each other, ok I guess, so where the hell is Aang.

Then when the trailor was over I had to go looking through the intertubes to understand what I had just saw and realized it was not The Last Airbender and I was relieved.

Cameron’s movie looks ok and I’ll definitely rent it when it comes out on dvd.

I think there are actually like half a dozen films greenlit or something like that. At the very least a trilogy.

I was thinking it is more like The Smurfs meet Starship Troopers

What I don’t understand is why they didn’t just use real people and makeup for the aliens. I know the “answer” would be something along the lines of “we wanted them to have a decidedly non-human feel to them,” but . . . the fucking animation is distracting and makes them look like cartoons. I can suspend disbelief so much easier for a human in makeup (say, LotR Orc) than for a cgi creation (say, I Am Legend zombie.) It’s still 10 times as real-looking. The technology is not as far along as directors think it is and probably won’t be for a couple more decades.

What is this movie about?! Trailer looks like a great SciFi action movie, but really confusing.

I have no idea, but based on the trailer, I’m going out on a limb.

The night elves of planet CareBear 4 live in beautiful harmony with nature, use every part of the blern, etc. Then the nasty humans show up. The humans move a soldier’s mind into a night elf body and send him down to meet the elves, share some blern quesadillas, etc. The soldier realizes that the night elves are just great people. Meanwhile, the nasty humans have discovered that the planet is swimming in dilithium crystals, and decide to evict the night elves. And they’re going to serve the eviction notice on the business end of 4500mm Weyland Yuitani Native People’s Opression Mech with optional Enviro-Rape attachment.

Of course, the noble soldier realizes that he must stop the humans and restore galatic harmony. I bet it has a happy ending.

And what’s wrong with cartoons, I ask you? Some of the best films of the last few years have been cartoons.

The way I see it, *Avatar *is a full-length animated movie with a few live-action sequences - and I’m fine with that. Let’s see Cameron challenge Pixar.

Yup. And the DS, PC, PSP and Wii too.

Sentient alien race inhabits a planet with resources a human company wants to exploit. (it’s implied it’s the same company from Aliens) The aliens are in the way, but they have a sort of hive mind connection to the planet, so they make the Avatar program which creates a body for a Marine to inhabit so he can infiltrate the alien society.

Only in the first and third movies. In the second one the company has the upper hand at the end.

Absolutely nothing, except that they don’t blend well with live-action. Example: As I was learning Photoshop, I read a book about digitally coloring comic books. One of the things they gave as an example NOT to do is insert real objects into animated pictures, such as [drawn] Batman standing on a [drawn] rooftop under the [real] moon. It doesn’t look right and is distracting to the eye.

Based on the trailer, the film won’t have many live-action shots to distract from the CGI.

I saw what you did there

I’m again reminded that Cameron must be quite the afficianado of old-time SF. As soon as I heard the “disable human shunted into an alien body” bit, I thought it sounded awfully familiar. This is only the setup, not the whole movie (or short story), of course, but that particular story is quite well-known enough for me to think it must be part of Cameron’s inspiration.

That would be the upcoming M Night Shamalamadingdong movie. So to spoil the ending, they are all really dead, the Last Airbender has a really strong right arm, the whole thing really takes place in present day a few miles from the highway, the bad guys can be killed with water and it is strongly implied that the air the Airbender bends is the same scary wind from The Happening.

Well it is Final Fantasy XIII: Avatar, right? That would make it PS3. They should have noted that in the trailer.
