Because they take up unnecessary bandwidth and server power.
Because they’re distracting.
Because some people think their avatar is more important than the content of their post.
Because they don’t provide anything useful that a well-composed post couldn’t do twenty times better.
Because the moderator workload would double (at least) from policing avatars to make sure nobody used explicit and/or copyrighted images.
Because the majority of the people here don’t want them.
Don’t like any of the above reasons? Is the ability to have an avatar your number one priority when checking out a new message board? Then buh-bye, now, and don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.
If, on the other hand, you think you can get over the travesty that is the lack of avatars on the SDMB, feel free to stick around. If nothing else, we could use the $14.95 to buy some more of whatever we’re feeding the hamsters lately – it’s working.

I mean, I can’t necessarily speak for Lynn or anyone else, but when I read notes sent to ME that say “I demand blahblahsuchandsuch” I can’t help but think of this tiny, tiny person shaking a tiny tiny self-important fist.
Tell me, Beav ol’ buddy, are the pretty happy colorful pictures important to you enjoying your reading? I know they are so awfully much fun in the books you get from the library; why, they practically tell the story sometimes! But sometimes, Beav, the pictures on internet boards like this don’t tell the story.

A person actually has to read and comprehend information here. The exchange of thoughts, opinions, ideas and observations of the world around us, is what this place is about.
