I installed AVG 8.0 a few weeks ago and now, for some reason, the ‘scanning’ icon at the bottom seems to come and go randomly. Now, I’m sure it’s there during the actual scans (around lunch time, when I’m not home), but it tends to be on at other times as well and as far as I can tell, it seems random. Is this happening to anyone else? Do you think un un/reinstall would take care of it?
It’s probably looking for new updates. I always have my scan with AVG done at midnight on Monday morning - set the schedules and it should eliminate your issues.
I did that. It was ‘running’ last night at midnight when I went to bed. It wasn’t actually sccanning or updating and it was still ‘running’ this morning when I got up, again, it wasn’t doing anything.
The new AVG will scan all of your internet links, so if you search on Google, I think it pre-fetches sites to check for their virus potential. It’s something that should definitely be turned off as it was really slowing my computer and internet down. Just double-click the icon and disable “LinkScanner”.
You forgot to uncheck the box during the install that said something like “enable scheduled scan”. If you leave this, you’ll see AVG scanning every day around the same time. Run the installer again, make sure to uncheck the box. Continue with the install like normal and everything should be good.
Even if I have the schedule set to scan around noon when I’m not home?
Bob55, why would it only be on one computer? Over the course of a day or two, I installed the new AVG on 6 computers and I’m only having this particular problem on one of them.
I think it will scan at the next available time if your computer was shut down or in sleep/hibernate during your scheduled time. Basically, when you come back online, it starts scanning.
My computer is always up and running, 24 hours a day.
Then I got nothing. Try the uninstall/reinstall and hopefully that will fix the quirk.
