Avocado Appreciation Thread

sj2 - deep frying avocados. BRILLIANT.

Yep- sprinkle with lime juice and dip in soy for the salt-what a treat. There are a ton of tempura batter recipes online. Make them small because it is like eating melted butter and they will fall apart if too large.

I also suggest tempura bananas for dessert. With ice cream on the top. Ginger ice cream if you can get it.

Excuse me while I wipe my chin. You people are seriously making me drool. As a California girl living on the East Coast, the three foods I miss the most are:

  1. Good, cheap avocados
  2. Good sourdough
  3. Mother’s cookies

When I was a kid, you could get four avocados for a buck in the summer. I like them mashed on sourdough or pumpernickel with mayo and monterey jack cheese, but I’ll take them anyway I can get them.

Not crazy about guacamole, though. It’s not avocado-y enough.

Oh, what a wonderful thread.

I grew up on halved avocados with Lawry’s Seasoning Salt or lemon pepper. Mm, mm.

Now that I’m all grown up, I blend the avocados into sour cream and add Lawry’s and lime.

Best tortilla chip dip EVAR!
Mmm mmm, I need to go buy some avocados now.

A Japanese restaurant in Iowa City makes Spicy Tuna Avocado Boats. Amazing.

Take a tennis ball size ball of spicy tuna sashimi (cut really small, but not like ground beef)
Roll in flying fish roe
Plop in seed hole of half an avocado
Cut slice about the size of a quarter off bottom of avocado half so it sits still
Jam slice in round end of avocado half to make a little rudder
Douse with soy sauce and eat with a spoon

sniff Sometimes I miss Iowa City. :frowning:

I loves me some avocado, I do.

Slice, salt and scoop. Gots lotsa magnesium and potassium too.

Oh man oh man oh man. This thread is making me crave avocado and I’ve already changed into my wickypants, so no going out to get some.

I’m a California girl too, and although it’s easy enough to find avocados around here, they aren’t quite as ubiquitous. (Californians will put avocado on anything. Because we are smart.) I did discover that a little market near my house has them for 2/$1. AND they have Mexican Coke, too. A nice ripe avocado, a glass of Mexican Coke…bliss.

I have to agree exactly with Caprese’s guac recipe-- maybe lime juice instead of the lemon, but it’s all good. Mmmm. Can’t believe how many people don’t know how to make a decent guacamole.

I lived in Hawaii in high school and there was some guy who would pay small bills to my dad in avocados instead of cash, so we’d have— really and for true— paper grocery sacks full of avocados. Mmmm.
Stark Raven Mad: This avocado lassi idea is interesting. . . latte as in coffee with milk?

I agree with the guac recipe up to the cumin. Man, cumin has no place within 500 miles of decent guac, IMO.

Since relocating to Houston I’ve once again become a big fan of fresh guacamole. Also agree with Caprese’s recipe except for lime instead of lemon juice and hold off on the cumin.

After 25 years in small town midwest, I had all but written off guac due to the over processed / pureed goop they try to pass off.

Kansas doesn’t have crap for avocados. They are horribly expensive too, at about $2 each. But sometimes, when you get to the produce isle just at the right time…

Mmmm. Put me in the “cut it in half and just eat it with a spoon” category.

Yep, coffee with milk. In a fancy drinks place in Surabaya I had the option of chocolate and vanilla syrup, sprinkles, and durian in the drink as well, but I’ve always preferred the basic one.

(Sorry about the latte confusion - I grew very much up part of the Starbucks generation.)
