I don’t believe this for a second. You think Dashboard, Saves the Day, and Thursday are suddenly selling more records because they’re better than they used to be? No, it’s because ‘emo’ is the new trend being co-opted by Megacorp, and they’re getting airtime on Viacom and blurbs in RS. It’s not rocket science – you get promotion dollars behind you, you move units. Get the boy and girl acts out of the way, get that muscle behind x band, and buy their records will be exactly what the vast majority of the record buying public will do.

These bands might be selling more, (although nowhere near the Britney league), but I very much doubt that it’s the Britney and Avril fans buying it. Their sales have increased amongst the same people that made Evan Dando a heartthrob; semi-alternative kids that were buying Creed albums last year.

If you get alternative fans buying the same thing, there are still a lot of sales there. You might have an argument for disposing of bands such as Matchbox 20, Train and Linkin Park, but Britney fans are looking for something else.

I’m not sure why there’s any doubt as to whether Avril has penned her own songs or not. Check out the words to Sk8er Boi - a professional songwriter isn’t that bad. The music on the other hand - I’m pretty sure she had a bit of help with that.
