baby blues

Does anyone know what’s happened to the cartoon version of Baby Blues on WB? Did it get cancelled?

–If I have one more, we’ll be outnumbered!

Officially–WB only ordered 8 shows and is reviewing the numbers before deciding to do more. Look for it possibly returning in the summer of 2001.

Unofficially–WB took a warm family comic strip and turned it into a crude, sophmoric cookie cutter sitcom (changing many of the supporting characters in the process)and they took an increadable amount of flack for it, including some from the comic creators. After the show first premiered, the ratings were down, though not necessarily bad by WB standards. By the end of the run, WB demographics showed that few of of comic fans were left watching (I know I wasn’t), and the remaining viewers were mostly the typical WB viewers.

The original idea behind the show was to draw a wider spectrum of viewers to WB, but they failed. And unless they draw closer to the comics original design, they never will. The odds of me watching another one are virtually zero and they know it. The odds of them getting any promtional help from the comics creators is virtually zero and they know it.

My guess is it’s dead, but officially that’s not the word.

I saw a couple of episodes and I hope it IS dead. I enjoy the strip, but hated the cartoon. The strip is one of the few that allow its characters to age.

The instant I saw that snotnose punk who never, ever got any kind of comeuppance, I knew the show was in trouble. That and Zoe being practically reduced to a cameo. The show just looks and feels totally wrong, and I wouldn’t be surprised if WB just let it go.

My to-be-roommate recently got a job on the show, and he said it has a commitment (animation has been ordered) through December 2001. Haven’t seen it myself, though, but I hope it lasts at least as long as our rental lease…
