I was watching a video-only story on CNN’s website about a woman who got an Elmo Potty Time book for her daughter.
Supposedly, when you push the button for Baby David, he asks, “Uh on, who wants to die?”
The makers of the book claim he’s saying, “Uh oh, who has to go?”, but the file compression makes it sound like the other phrase to some people.

Meh. I can hear it either way. The audio isn’t great (it’s a cheap audio-book after all) so I can see how somebody might misunderstand it, but I don’t think it really says “who wants to die.”

I heard “…die” and my wife heard “…go”.
Of course, I expected to hear “…die”, so I was biased.
Kinda like the backwards masking thing.

It does sound like he’s saying. ‘Uh, oh! Who wants to die?’
But then, I have a Teletubbie that sounds like it’s saying ‘Faggot, faggot! Faggot, faggot! Faggot, Faggot! Lick my butt!’

Correction: On further thought, it’s ‘Bite my butt.’
It sounded like die to me. If the line was “to potty” it might be plausable that it sounded like “to die” given some people’s pronunciation of potty (“poddie” in kidspeak), but I sure don’t hear “to go”.
Anybody here into sound engineering?
It would be interesting if someone could try to replicate the phrase.
Sounded like a squeaky, distorted “go!” to my husband and I, like someone twisted the Muppet’s arm on the last word or something.
So all those years of being relentlessly tickled finally made Elmo snap?
He’s actually saying “fi dit, fi dit, man man man” which is Chinese for “Faster, faster, slow slow slow.” The Teletubby in question, Po, sometime speaks in Chinese and enjoys riding a scooter.
As for Elmo, I have no idea. But it’s a good incentive for the bad parent- “If you won’t use the bathroom, Elmo will kill you!”
“My name is eerie Elmo, and I’m gonna kill you! Tee hee!”
I never would’ve thought “go” could sound like “die,” but there you have it. I can hear “go,” but I can also understand why people heard “die,” especially if they didn’t know what it was supposed to say.
Would anybody here really be shocked by a Satanic Elmo?

(There’s one – maybe it’s Po? – that sounds like it’s saying ‘Bubble gum, bubble gum, doop-de-doop!’ That one amuses me too, for some reason.)
