It’s the best Christmas song ever. And for several years now Darlene Love has been on the last Letterman show before Christmas to perform. The EPG doesn’t tell me who’s scheduled for Friday night, but I’m hoping she’ll be on.
Nobody does it better than this, or this, or this. Just look at the performance she gets out of the band and the backup singers too.
I love the Letterman Christmas show. Here’s a behind-the-scenes video about the making of the annual Darlene Love “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” segment narrated by Paul Shaffer:
Thanks randwill! I’m counting that clip in my record haul of Xmas gifts this year. That montage at the end is incredible. It’s not like Christmas at all without Darlene Love singing Baby, Please Come Home.
I didn’t think it was as good this year as it has been in the past, but that’s fine. She’s not getting any younger and I’m probably overly-familiar with the presentation after 20+ years. For me, the whole thing rests on that moment when she does the please-please call and response, and the snow starts falling.
I hope Dave goes off the air before Darlene is unable to perform the song any longer. It will be easier to accept the loss of my holiday tradition that way.
