Bubbaleechie has reflux, it is not very bad in the sense that she isn’t vomiting huge amounts and she isn’t loosing weight BUT she is very distressed.
I’ve got special anti-reflux baby formula for her. We are giving her mylanta (antacid) after each feed. Being careful not jiggle her too much (we sit still for 15 min after feeds prior to burping to let her stomach settle). I’ve propped her cot on an angle so she doesn’t lie flat as being on an angle makes it hard for the acid to wash back out of her tummy.
But she is still distressed. Yesterday she only got 3 hrs sleep during the day and cried from 1pm to 10.30pm. She’d start to drop off to sleep then another wave of reflux would hit, I can see her straining and pushing against it, then she starts to cry, it subsides after awhile, she starts to nod off and the whole thing starts again.
I saw the maternal and child health nurse yesterday and she said if it isn’t better within a week to see my GP but I don’t think I can watch my baby suffer for that long.
Does anyone have ANY suggestions as to what may help?
Oh, poor baby! I’m sorry I really can’t suggest anything beyond what you’re doing already – and it sounds like you really are doing a great job! – but I sure hope things improve rapidly! The only good news I can offer is that generally early digestive difficulties (my son was VERY colicky) tend to be outgrown within a few months.
If she were even a month or two older, I’d suggest checking to see if she might be trying to cut a tooth. (I’ve known babies as young as 2 months to cut their first teeth, so it’s not unheard of.) I would suggest going to the doctor sooner, though, if you really need to – although, and I hate to admit this, usually we moms suffer worse than the babies!
I’m not a doctor, but I was a puking baby. I had the tube between my stomach and small intestine blocked (there is a common term…) and it made me puke up everything. Surely not a diagnosis, but I’d get it looked at (I was 7 weeks old when I had the operation)
Thanks for your responses.
Just a quick update to add I’m now running a temp of 39 degrees C (37 is normal) and it looks like the infection I had a couple of weeks ago is back. Seems the anti-biotics I finished yesterday didn’t work. Darn. MIL is coming to collect Bub so she doesn’t get my bug.
Life just isn’t meant to be easy.
