(Images)Of course, like with pizza, you can add other toppings to Flammkuchen. The basic recopy is a pizza dough spread with sour creme, with onions and bacon bits. Sometimes I put just sour creme and onion, and add smoked salmon after it has been baked. You can also make sweet varieties, e.g. sour creme and thin slices of apple or other fruit, and a bit of sugar and cinnamon for seasoning.
Now I’m hungry, and it’s not even breakfast time yet.
Yay, got my first cards today, and how beautiful they are! First a vintage card from Anaglyph showing the burning of Zozobra at the Fiestas de Santa Fe. I knew about Burning Man, but this was news to me. Then not one, but two cards from blondebear, one showing an alligator strolling an ice plain in front of a Colorado mountain vista (it’s true, I didn’t know that there were alligators in Colorado :)), and then a very vintage (copyright is from 1949!) and beautiful card from the mission San Juan Capistrano with lovely unfoldable colorized impressions of the mission in the style of that time. How very nice from both of you.
Actually, we have a similar custom here in Zürich - On the third Monday in April, Sechseläuten-Monday, winter in the form of a snowman is burned at the stake. The head of the snowman is filled with explosives, and the time interval between the lighting of the stake and the explosion of the head is supposed to predict whether it is going to be a nice summer or a rainy one.
The world is small, because here in Westphalia we have the similar custom of the Easter Fire, in which up until a few years ago, a figure representing Judas was burned on top of the fire, but the Judas effigy was largely abandoned here over the last years because the burning at the stake of something representing a human had too many unfortunate implications.
I received two more today!
The first was from Ivorytowerdenizen, some very cool illustrations from a French textbook. She got my IRL name wrong, but I love the card none the less.
The second was from Algher, a picture of the USS Midway with an invitation to stow aboard. May I have the Captain’s quarters please?
Due to the recent weather nastiness in South Carolina, I will try my best to get my cards out by tomorrow.
Apologies to all
I sent my cards today. Ten cards are winging their way to five destinations, three in the US and two in Europe.
Oh, no! I’m sorry! Glad you got it.
Ivorytowerdenizen dropped me a note from East Coast with a card of French educational charts & textbook figures. In my case, I have a series of images of blue whales.
And today I got a card from needscoffee in Seattle. It’s gotlenticular printing on the front. Excellent! Thanks!
ETA: I’ll definitely use it for self hypnosis.
I’ve received several postcards over the last few days, but computer issues have left me nearly incommunicado.
First was a card from Switzerland’s Anaglyph, of my US city, from a visit here last year - it’s flown home to roost!
Then a couple from UK’s Teuton: one of an antique steam train from 1825, from a RR museum; the other of the third Eddystone lighthouse, sent back to Plymouth after its rock base became too eroded. Very cool!
Yesterday, a picture of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Laurent House in Rockford, Ill, from Pai325. My sister is a Wright expert and helped produce a prominent book about him.
Thank you!
I was out of town for a few days, so when I went to check my mail yesterday I was hopeful that I would get a postcard. However, when I arrived at my apartment complex’s mailroom, there was a sign posted on the door that it was closed because some knucklehead managed to break their key off in the door (paraphrasing, of course. :)) Today, the door was fixed and I found two postcards in my mailbox. Yay! I got a card from Elendil’s Heir showing a beautiful sunset (or sunrise?) at Gettysburg. Gettysburg is a place I want to visit someday. Anaglyph sent me a cool card featuring the Statue of Liberty having a BBQ via her torch. The card made me smile. Thanks to both!
I received three more! From Pai325 and interior view of Laurent House in Rockford, Il, showing this room viewed from the other side. Since I toured the US in the company of a student of architecture in my youth, I had to see a lot of Frank Lloyd Wrights design. From Algher, I got a Texas postcard, sent via an SXSW show. Finally, for blondebear I got an envelope containing a card showing Elvis on a golf cart and a beautiful vintage leporello folder of views showing “Scenic Gems of Yosemite National Park” (postage 1 1/2 cents without message). Wow!
Thank you all!
I hope you will - you’ll be glad you did. I always have a palpable sense of history there. Be sure to start at the impressive new visitors center!
EinsteinsHund’s postcard arrived from Germany yesterday–nice scenes of the tourist town of Attendorn. Looks like a cool spot just to wander around to check out the art and architecture. The wikipedia page lists nearby Atta Cave as a nearby scenic attraction…I’m a big fan of show caves and I’d love to see that in person!
I hope folks liked those cards. I’m a fan of botanical and anatomical scientific drawings, and thought these were charming.
I’m still “not quite done” in mailing out my cards … more later as time permits.
Apologies to all for my pokiness
Whew! Finally back in the world of the living after three day full days of horse shopping (successful!), a three-day horse show (exhausting) all with a wicked head cold. I’m getting too old to do all that stuff in a few short days.
For those worrying about being slackers, in Post #22, I extended the mailing deadline to Friday, October 9, so you’ve got a bit of extra time.
I have been on the receiving end of the some great postcards! **Teuton **sent me two, one from the Darlington Railway Museum – I like trains! – and a simply beautiful one of a painting of Bangor Pier in North Wales. Thanks, Teuton!
IvoryTowerDenizen sent one of drawings of a starfish, including a cross-section, that is stunning! Thank you, ITD.
The image of the Laurent House from Pai325 makes me want to live there. How cool that you live so close by. I love Frank Lloyd Wright’s work. Thanks, Pai!
I finally scored a vintage card from blondebear and it was all the more memorable because it was a multiple card set of Bryce Canyon and Cedar Breaks, Utah, and the Grand Canyon. I used to live in Utah and adore the southern part of the state, especially Cedar Breaks. Thanks, blondebear, a most apt selection. I like the World’s Largest Truckstop card, too.
**needscoffee **sent a lovely view of Seattle’s skyline at night, complete with Space Needle. Thanks, coffee.
My co-coordinator **Elendil’s Heir **sent me a striking sunset view of a cannon at Gettysburg, one of the places on my bucket list to visit. Thanks, EH!
pw6163 sent a fun card of kangaroos and that huge red mesa that sits in the middle of nowhere in Australia. I’d like to know more about the geology of that formation. Thanks, pw!
dbygawdcapn sent an amazing card of Eadward Muybridge images that seem to move. I’ve always admired Muybridge’s work so this card is a treat. Thanks much!
Atomic Mama sent me a card with two lobsters on it – one red and one black. How can something that looks so strange taste so good? Thanks,** AM**!
EinsteinsHund’s card is scene of the town of Attendorn, where he says other folks come to vacation. I can see why. I want to go there, too. Thanks, EH!
I’ve mailed some of my cards and will send more out over the next couple of days.
Thanks to everyone for reporting in. I’ll compile a list of who has got what in a few days.
Anaglyph’s card arrived in the post this morning. Brilliant card (street art, dragons painted on a wall), it’s a new favourite.
