Backlash over Koch Bros. donation to UNCF

Cite

Ok, so yeah, the Koch brothers probably have ulterior motives for the donation. After all, even though they give out millions in donations, they almost NEVER make donations this large OR this public. And yes, they have supported policies that have been perceived to be against African Americans (although that’s debatable).

But it shouldn’t be about politics, it should be about education. And for AFSCME to stop their partnership with UNCF over the donation Cite is completely ludicrous.

So the UNCF will be giving scholarships to selected “Uncle Toms” and is expected to say “Yes, sah!”?

I think the UNCF should have refused the donation from the evil brothers. Is it too late for them to change their minds? – I’d hope more than $25 million of other donors will withdraw to send a message.

I’m guessing Chuck and Dave have been worrying. Where will the Alan Keyeses and Clarence Thomases of tomorrow come from?

Most of the journalists and other people I know of who have been speaking out against issues like police brutality for years, and doing things like: supporting the Ferguson protests (years before this specific event existed), working against racial disparities in sentencing and law enforcement, working to free innocent people from Death Row, and being the most vocal about these things while mostly being ignored by conservative and “liberal” politicians and media …

are Koch funded.

ETA: I also know plenty of entrepreneurs and people who would not disagree with the idea "“how entrepreneurship, economics, and innovation contribute to well-being for individuals, communities, and society” who are not conservative.

Is someone seriously suggesting only “Uncle Toms” believe in community benefits of entrepreneurship and that conservatives are the only innovators? That’s pretty absurd. And racist.

Exactly. Which is why the Koch’s should be paying 95% of their income back to the state in taxes so we can use the democratic process to decide the best way to spend that money instead of letting oligarchs dictate its uses.

I’m sure this is true. There are unfortunately a lot of people who get all their information from the conservative media circle.

Not at all. But the Koch brothers are not some unknown. We’ve seen the kinds of things they’ve financed in the past. They have a narrow ideological viewpoint and they use their money to promote it.

So while it’s certainly true that there are many forms of community benefits and entrepreneurship and innovation, the Koch brothers will only be supporting their own versions of them.

“Uncle Toms”? Seriously? Here is the criteria of the scholarship…Cite

No question about that. But the notion that the Kochs are somehow going to bend these COLLEGE AGED students completely to their philosophy is kind of ridiculous. Its just another way to fund the education of worthy students.

The left hate machine in action. Demonize anyone who disagrees with you and your calls for tolerance and diversity.

The right has taught us well. You guys should take pride of ownership

I would hardly call the Koch’s right wing conservatives. They are more followers of classical liberalism. They give their money to a lot of organizations that further free market fundamentals, probably more of it to education than to straight up political contributions.

There is a lot of political rhetoric thrown around about the Koch’s and what they supposedly stand for. But the last time I checked, they haven’t violated any campaign finance laws, and both of them are citizens and are free to spend their money legally however they like. A recent article I read indicated that David has donated well over a billion dollars of his own personal wealth to numerous non political philanthropic causes, including cancer research, the arts, sciences, etc. Some people say, well he did that to make himself look better in the public eye. Or maybe he actually cares about those things also.

ETA: I fail to see any backlash over their donation to the UNCF.

Leave it to the SDMB to vilify someone giving $25 million to underprivileged future-scholars. In the liberal mind, any minority who is not saluting the Democratic party is an “Uncle Tom.” It’s sickening, really.

What I’ve learned from this thread is that the Koch brothers can do no right, and if they’re giving a fortune to those in need, it must be evil.

Sorry, that dog won’t hunt. This is the Koch brothers we’re talking about. They’ve spend decades financing demonization campaigns. I’d say they’re reaping what they’ve sown, except they’re not - they’ve sown a thousand times more than could ever be directed back at them.

Of course they haven’t violated any laws. Part of what they’ve paid for is a legal system that legalizes their form of buying politicians. They don’t break laws - they write laws.

Ok, I’m not sure where THAT “liberalism” line came from. The Koch’s THEMSELVES would probably take issue with that remark. But one of the backlash came from the AFSCME link I posted.

Hey, if 95% of climatologists can be paid off to lie about global warming…

They’ve given a much larger fortune to creating the policies that placed a lot of those people in need. You don’t get credit for pulling one person out of a pit if you dug the pit and threw a thousand people into it. Especially if the only reason you pulled that one guy out was so he could stand on the edge of the pit and tell all the people still down there it’s their own fault.
