Last night I had the itch to go backpacking stir up again. I was watching Man Vs Wild and while I don’t plan to parachute into the middle of the jungle, I do want to go backpacking again. It’s been nearly a year since I was last on the trails, and actually all my gear is in Atlanta, and it’s going into the deep of Winter - so it won’t be until Spring of next year that I get to go.
I pinged a few buddies from the theatre who struck me as possibly backpackers too, but we’ll see. I’m eager to hit the trails again.
Anyone else know the itch? Anyone else itching right now?
My last actuall backpacking trip was on cross-country skis. But that was a few years ago. We set non dome tents on top of the snow and used our skis and polls for the tent stakes. It was about 4-5 feet deep at our camp site.
My Wife and I have since taken to go ‘camping’ on our property about 40 miles from our home on our wedding aniversery. It’s at about 9000 feet in the Rockies. About 2000 feet lower than we live. So it’s like going to the sun belt.
Sorry to make light of Florida winters. I know the weather can hit you anywhere on the planet.
The last time we went camping away from home, was at Big Bend National Park in the very southern tip of Texas. That was about 9 years ago. July. Ugg.
We now live in an area and house where camping seems sort of redundent. Ever since I moved out of Denver to an isolated spot in the mountains… I’ve lost a bit of the urge to go and sleep in the dirt. Though sometimes I do miss it.
It was eaiser and more fun in the '70s and '80s when all you had to do was find a path, a flat spot and build a fire.
