Brewer and Shipley were masters of down-home folk rock, midwestern style. Their originals were fine and their covers made the songs sound new. They’ll always be known for “One Toke Over the Line,” of course, but they were also one of the most overtly political bands of the 1960s, great singalone listening to any anti-Nixon tirade. Skip the first album, and start with Weeds and Tarkio Road.
