The ironclads’ 1862 battle is usually considered a draw, as neither sunk the other, but the Virginia was trying to break the US Navy’s blockade of the Confederacy, and the Monitor kept her from doing so.

Legend has it that Cunard intended to name the ship Victoria , in keeping with company tradition of giving its ships names ending in “ia”, but when company representatives asked the King’s permission to name the ocean liner after Britain’s “greatest Queen”, he said his wife, Mary of Teck, would be delighted.

Italian passenger ship that sank in 240 feet of water of Nantucket after colliding with the MS Stockholm in July 1956. The Stockholm survived the incident and was repaired, and over the years passed through various hands, was converted to a cruise ship and rechristened the MV Astoria, and remained in service until the COVID pandemic of 2020 effectively halted cruise operations worldwide. It is currently laid up in Rotterdam, its future uncertain.
