@Bullitt I subbed Benazir Bhutto for 5. Ninoy Aquino, who was a Senator and Governor but not a head of state. His wife and son became heads of state but fortunately they were not assassinated or executed.

Benazir Bhutto, Hendryk Verwoerd, Yitzhak Rabin and Indira Gandhi were all heads of government as prime minister, not heads of state; each of their countries had a president who served in that capacity. Is four too many to replace here before proceeding?

OK I subbed Nicolae Ceaușescu for Benazir Bhutto
So that’s just 3 heads of government
Or maybe @panache45 will be all right with widening the category to " heads of state and government?

Fine with me. It’s in the spirit of what I had intended.

I think we should coin a term that includes “heads of state and/or head of government” and/or nabob" and stop this hair-splitting. We should not need to look up every entry in this thread to makee sure our entry technically meets every detail. Nobody assassinates “head of state” because they have no power. This thread is about assassinations of people in power.

I think “national leaders” would cover both bases.
