I’ve been on the Lexington too.

To clarify a point — the USS Constellation was the last sail-only warship BUILT (between 1853 and 1855) for the US Navy. It was struck from the Navy rolls and decommissioned originally in 1864, but went through several cycles of reactivation and decommissioning over the next ninety years, when she was decommissioned for the final time and struck from the Navy rolls in 1955.

The USS Constitution is also sail-only, but was built between 1794 and 1797. However, since the USS Constitution is still in commission and carried on the Navy rolls, she could make a valid claim that, by being STILL ACTIVE AND IN COMMISSION, SHE is technically the last sail-only warship of the US Navy, to go along with her title as the oldest commissioned naval vessel in the world still afloat.

Flew the right-hand seat on a cross-country flight from LSE to LOU in 1970 as part of an Eagle Scout “Career Day” … at that time, before I realized just how shitty my eyes were, I had wanted to become a pilot and was partnered up with a local GA operator. Imagine my surprise when he asked me if I’d like to take an airplane ride, and then found out we were doing a (roughly) 1000-mile round-trip delivery trip!!

And yes, I actually got to handle the controls for a bit … under the watchful eyes of the PIC who was, of course, prepared to immediately take back control if I had so much as farted at the wrong time.
