Actually, Mark Twain published TWO sequels to ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’.
The first was ‘Tom Sawyer Abroad’ (1894). In that story, generally acknowledged to be a parody of adventure stories like those of Jules Verne, Tom, Huck, and Jim travel to Africa in a futuristic hot air balloon, where they survive encounters with lions, robbers, and fleas to see some of the world’s greatest wonders, including the Pyramids and the Sphinx.
The other was ‘Tom Sawyer, Detective’, published two years later. In that one, Tom and Huck solve the mystery of a lost twin and missing diamonds. Incidentally, it is this incarnation of Tom Sawyer that makes an appearance in the 2003 film, ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’, as an employee of the US Secret Service and (in the novelization of the film) makes reference to the fact that he once worked as a detective.
Although since ‘Huckleberry Finn’ was itself a sequel to ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’, it can just as easily be argued that these were in fact a second and third sequel to the original novel.
Yes, but neither of those sequels was Huckleberry Finn Meets Huckleberry Hound.
As I understood the category “Sequels That Never Were”, it was asking for sequels that had never been written, and it didn’t ask specifically for books or films that had never been followed by a sequel.
Of course, @Prof.Pepperwinkle, who started the category, is welcome to weigh in here.
Missed the edit window to add that Prof. Pepperwinkle posted #11, Littler Women. Little Women had several sequels, including Little Men, Good Wives and Jo’s Boys. Again, this confirms my belief that his category wasn’t asking specifically for books or films that had never been followed by a sequel.
Wasn’t trying to start a fight or anything; just adding information. After all, this is just for funsies, right?
Although maybe, someday, you’ll be on “Jeopardy” (hopefully, not against me!) and locked in a three-way tie going into the final round. They announce that the topic will be “19th-Century American Literature”, and the answer is “one of the two sequels to ‘Huckleberry Finn’.”
Thanks for the info, BB. It may come in handy one day when I’m watching Jeopardy, but we won’t meet on the show; I tried out 8 years ago and didn’t make it.
