I believe that was PRINCE John, who was holding the throne while Richard was off on the Crusades.

Yes, that’s true, John had not become king yet in most of the stories. My favorite vaguely remembered story from childhood has Robin stealing from the rich, not to give to the poor, but to raise the ransom for Richard who was being held by the emperor.
