Founded as a company team by the A.E. Staley cornstarch processing company. After moving to Chicago, they played the 1920 season in the newly-formed American Professional Football Association (which became the National Football League in 1922) as the Chicago Staleys before being renamed the Bears.

Their anthropomorphic mascot, introduced in 2003, is named ‘Staley Da Bear’ in tribute to the team’s origin in mid-state Illinois.
