As a history buff with a big Charleston component in my genealogy I saw the brochures and signs for “Charlestowne Landing”, supposedly a re-creation of 17th century Charleston. It’s a pier, a ship (that you couldn’t get onto the day I was there), and that’s about it. I was expecting some kind of living history and nothing is remotely as impressive or as historical as ‘real’ Charleston and it isn’t worth driving even a few minutes out of the way to see it.

Mixed feelings about this. Amazing views out over the city and lake, and surprisingly good food at Horizons restaurant, but a looooooooong wait on busy days to get up the elevators.
The last time I saw South of the Border was in 2009 but there are several reviews of it on Tripadvisor from this month. So yes, it’s still very much there. It looked almost ready to close down in 2009 but recent reviews say that they are refurbishing.
