It was a contractual dispute. He owed an album to the label and didn’t want to do it. So he decided that if he renamed himself he was forming a new act, which was free to sign a contract with a different label. The same way that the Rolling Stones might have a contract with one label but Mick Jagger might sign a contract with a different label. So Prince essentially told the studio “Prince owes you his next album. But this album is being made by Love Symbol #2.” (Which is what that weird thing was officially called.) My understanding is that it didn’t hold up in court and Prince got out of his contract by more conventional means, at which time he switched his name back.

I deliberately did not go into detail but I’m sorry but this is not even close what happened.
1st, he changed his name almost 2 years AFTER Love Symbol #2 was released.
The dispute was not about any albums being owed to Warner Bros… In fact, it was the opposite. He rebelled against their strict scheduling control of his music… He wanted to release his music as soon as it was ready, including whole backlog of 500 songs. Warner Bros. prevented that because they thought it would saturate the market.

It was NOT an attempt to get out of his contract, it was to make things difficult for their media, marketing, printing, etc…

How does that refute anything? Prince used the symbol as the title for an album in 1992 and copyrighted the symbol as Love Symbol #2. He then adopted the symbol as his name in 1993.

I didn’t go into the details either. But I don’t see much difference between what I wrote and what you wrote other than the words we used. I was explaining that the reason Prince changed his name wasn’t just some personal whim that he later decided was a bad idea. He did it because he was unhappy with Warner Bros and he did it to make things difficult for him. He changed his name back after his contract with Warner Bros ended and he had signed with Arista.
