Bakers Dozen

My childhood is being erased.

  1. All the record stores I used to go to… Musicland, Crow’s Nest, Tower Records, Peaches… all gone.
  2. Independent bookstores. The chain bookstores killed them and then Amazon killed the chain bookstores.
  3. LPs. The joy of putting a fresh record on my direct-drive turntable, and hearing the hi-fi stereo through my 3-foot high speakers.
  4. Lawn darts. One kid gets killed, and they’re banned. More kids die as a result of playing school sports, but I don’t see anyone calling for a ban on that.
  5. Nobody ever goes outside anymore. When I was a kid, even the nerds (like me) were out on their bikes, having adventures. Now everybody’s inside playing video games on the internet.
  6. The only password you needed in daily life was your locker combination. Your login was simply knowing where your locker was.
  7. Kids don’t go anywhere alone any more. We roamed the neighborhood, but now CPS is called if children walk without adults.
  8. School before zero tolerance policies. Remember when you could play tag, or cops and robbers, at recess, or try to innocently kiss someone? Not anymore.
  9. Do kids collect stamps and coins anymore? Or baseball cards?
  10. You could go home with friends on their school bus and call your mother after you got there. The Sheriff/FBI/Interpol wasn’t called because one kid wasn’t on his regular school bus.
  11. In high school we had either gym, swimming or hygiene class every single day (swimming was naked for boys). Today, most kids get none of this.

  12. A lot of great stores are gone… Toys R Us, Venture, Woolworth’s, A&P…

I still miss him now and then, and it’s been years now.

Thus named because we had to go to the local animal shelter several times before we found them open, and my dad said we’d finally gotten a dog “Better Late Than Never.” BLTN!

This list is even more depressing than the last one. I hope whoever gets 13 comes up with a more cheery list.
