From whom?

Primarily his cousin, the actuary. The sexy, sexy actuary.

  5. 5

(I have no idea if this is right or not, but: (1) “5” is prime, so bonus points there, and (2) it’s in the fifth spot, so that oughtta count for something, right? Maybe twin-siblings (but unsexy) primes? Anyway, we need to keep the game going…)

Hmmm… more math-inclined Dopers will be along shortly (and may pop in before I finish typing), but I’m not sure 5 works.

It’s not a cousin prime, because four digits before is 1 (not a prime by definition), and four digits after is 9, not a prime. It is, though, a sexy prime when paired with 11. Hubba hubba.

To keep it going (assuming I understood what was looked for in the new topic):

  1. 227
  2. 881
  3. 463
  4. 97
  5. 17

17 is cousins with 13, and sexy with 23.

Does anyone want to explain this? Yes, I know what a prime number is.

A cousin prime is a prime number that is exactly four away from another prime. A sexy prime is a prime number that is exactly six away from another prime. A sexy cousin prime is a prime number that is both four and six away from two other primes.

Thanks. I must have been sick that day in grade 10.

Have to admit, they were new concepts to me as well. I had heard of twin primes (prime numbers that are two apart) but never cousins or sexys before this.

I’ll also note that some definitions specify that the relevant primes cannot have any intervening primes between them. If so, some of the numbers given here don’t qualify. For example, my 97 - it’s four away from 101 and six away from 103. But some definitions would say the 103 doesn’t count as a sexy relationship because of the intervening 101.

To those people, I say “Lighten up, Francis. We’re playing a game where we’re saying there are thirteen in a dozen.”
