Memorable snowstorms/blizzards you’ve been in*

  1. Cleveland c. 1970: 3 feet overnight in the middle of October-I recall how I excited I was to see snow that early-spent all morning (Saturday IIRC) playing in it.
  • [Memorable for whatever reason(s)…fun or scary or whatever.]

  5. Indianapolis, c. 1995: Was riding in a car with my dad and ~10 y/o sister after dark. Car ran out of gas while we were on an icy bridge. Dad put the car in neutral and, while I was steering the car slightly left, he pushed with all his might to get the car closer to the middle of the shoulder. I was ~13 and had never been behind the wheel of a car before. Scared me to DEATH. Afterward, the three of us exited the car and began walking towards a gas station; gratefully, a passing car crewed by two twenty-something females pulled over and drove us to the gas station. Can’t actually remember if snow was involved or not, but it was BITTERLY cold.

  6. January 6, 1995–The biggest blizzard in a winter with 18 snowstorms. Dumped two feet of snow on top of the two feet the region already had.

  8. New York, February 11, North American blizzard of 2006. A year or so ago, I had been on the phone with a close friend whining about how I had found “the” ring, talked with my then-girlfriend’s parents, etc., but thought getting engaged on Valentine’s day was too cheesy (girlfriend and I were very cynical). His advice was that no one really celebrates/remembers the day you get engaged, so go for it. Flash forward. He’s at our new house, having not seen us since the engagement party. Fifteen minutes into the visit he asks what’s happening to our wedding plans. Our response: fly with us to Vegas and we’ll get married right away. Hectic travel-making plans ensue, including getting him and a rental car back to DC. The next morning, every airport on the east coast was closed, and so the re-routing began. After re-making plans over and over, we ended up flying out of Philly (a four hour drive) and getting married on …* Valentine’s Day*.

  9. The North American Ice Storm of 1998 - Yes, not technically a snowstorm, but very worthy of mention. I got off lucky with only 6 days without power, and a 6 week old baby at home. Some people went weeks and in fact months until the power grid was repaired.
