Brent Mayne played two seasons for the SF Giants, finishing here during Candlestick Park’s final season. When Pac Bell Park opened the next season (2000), Mayne was with the Rockies.

Well, there was a 12 inning game in which the Rockies ran out of pitchers- Mayne had pitched a little in his school days, so he volunteered to pitch. He threw one inning of shutout ball, and got a win.

I’ve seen many games in which a team was getting blown out, and let a non-pitcher take the mound, rather than wear out a real pitcher’s arm in a lost cause. But this is a rare case where a non-pitcher actually picked up a win!

According to Wikipedia, he said he never pitched at any level, and he is the only catcher in the twentieth century to have won a game as a pitcher.
Wiki:

On August 22, 2000, the Colorado Rockies sent Mayne in as a relief pitcher in the 12th inning against the Atlanta Braves. Mayne, the Rockies’ regular catcher, was unable to swing a bat due to a sprained left wrist and had missed the previous four games. Out of pitchers, manager Buddy Bell asked Mayne if he could pitch. Mayne, who later said he had never pitched at any level, responded, “Yeah, I can pitch.” He pitched one inning, surrendering no runs with a fastball that topped out at 83 miles per hour. Colorado won the game in the bottom of the 12th inning when rookie Adam Melhuse, pinch-hitting for Mayne, singled with the bases loaded and two outs. Mayne thus became the first position player to be credited with a win since Rocky Colavito in 1968, and the last to do so until Wilson Valdez in 2011.

Thanks for the update- and in the process, you gave us entry #8 and 9!!!

eta - while that was not my post, the next post, mine, was “anything sports related” until I amended it

Okay. I was wondering if it had to do with the current category, or it coupled with the last one.

Back to the game, and no obscure baseball for a while, okay? (Okay, SFC Schwartz?)
