Bald Heads Unite!!

Okay, so I’ve finally accepted the fact that I’m balding much like the ever so many millions in America. But I choose to shave my head for the clean look and happen to think I look pretty damn sexy. Unfortunately, it’s a pain and a half to maintain the close clean shaven head (my hair, or what’s left of it, grows quickly). I shave every morning with a Mach3 Turbo razor and it takes a good 30-40 minutes. And not only that, it’s often painful. Why? What exactly is razor burn? And how can I shave my head daily both quickly and painlessly? Use an electric shaver? I used to use an electric, but didn’t shave cleanly enough (probably because it was an older shaver). But listen, your suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks!

Micheal Jordan, Stone Cold, etc seem to have pretty clean heads.

You could always try this.

It’s like shaving by rubbing your hand over your head. Until you get to the ears. Shaving around the ears is a little tricky.

I gave up the fight and started shaving my head at 25. For me, keeping cleanly shaven isn’t worth the effort. I try to shave it clean twice a week. A little stubble is okay, unless you’re wearing a wool watch cap. Then it’s like having a head made of velcro.

As for razor burn, I still screw up sometimes and I’ve been shaving my head for years. Thoroughly wet the head with warm water, use a generous amount of shaving gel and really work it in, don’t try to stretch the life of your razor (use a new blade each time) and, for Pete’s sake, be gentle. Don’t press. Just go with it.

Most importantly, if you co-habitate, get a second opinion. I used to scrape and scrape and scrape because it felt, to me, like there was still hair in back and there was no good mirror angle to check it. Usually my wife reported no stubble where I could swear some existed.

Accepting the fact that it may not feel as smooth as you think it should will go a long way to preventing razor burn.

Just wanted to add: No matter how tempting it seems or how frustrated you are with having to take the time to shave: do not use Nair

It’s funny now, but it burned like hell. And it didn’t take all the hair off. And I had to go back and shave my burned, tortured dome. And it’s amazing I made it this far in life.

But someday, despite all warnings, I’m sure I will try waxing my head.

Remember though it is only cool to shave your head if you have hair. Otherwise you are wussing out.

Damn, Markxxx, use a smiley or something. Someone is liable to think such a fool statement was serious and get riled.

If you’ve lost so much hair that you are having trouble finding the balance between reasonable hair style and strangers wondering if that is a comb-over, shave the head. Comb-overs suck. Chicks dig smooth heads.

What’s really cool, bensonGemini, is when strange women rub your head for luck.

Absolutely.

Smooth > Bozo/Krusty the Clown hair > Comb-overs

Sure is a pain though. :frowning:

Jeez, Matt!

30-40 minutes to shave your head? Really?

I shave every day with the Mach 3, and it only takes me 5-7 minutes to miss my eyebrows and yet get a squeaky-clean dome and face.

My guess is your pain is a result of over-shaving… or under-lubrication.

Forget about electric shavers… they’re designed to chew the whiskers on faces, not heads. They don’t “shave”, they chew… and if it takes you 30 minutes with a Mach 3, it’s going to take you all morning to get your head smooth with a Norelco.

Don’t use foam. Use gel or soap or Noxema shaving cream, if you can find it.

Don’t lift the razor at the end of the stroke, but slide it back and slightly change the angle to shave the next path. Shave against the direction of growth once… instead of with the growth three or four times… unless you like razor burn.

Shave in the shower. Get your head good and wet, soap it up, rinse it off, then lather up again to get those whiskers water-logged and soft and easy to shave. Change your razor when it starts to “crunch” rather than slice your whiskers.

I have a one…

But, not two.

I decided the work to stay hairless was too much.

I grab what I call the “poodle-trimmer” (my electric hair shaver thingee) with the #1 blade guard (shortest guard) on it and just trim down to a very tight stubble. I leave it alone for a month or so when it’s grown out equivalent to the #4 guard length (somewhere around 3/8" - just long enough to grab with the fingertips) and shave it tight again.

Low maintenance.

My boss, also shaved bald, admits to maintaining his head twice daily - too much like work to me.
