Thank you to samclem for stepping in and upgrading my note to a warning. It appears that this is the consensus among both moderators and posters to be the correct course of action.
I am not defending myself, since this is obviously a topic on which passions run high. I, too, am an animal lover and the notion of the contents of that link turns my stomach. What I will do is explain what I was thinking in the hopes that everyone will understand: I have lately decided to reserve official warnings for instances where people continue behaviors after they have been asked (via a “note”) not to. So, when they continue to escalate things. Secondly, I would say that I would give an official warning to a really outrageous insult: something cruel, hateful and out-of-the-blue against another poster, for example. When I looked at the post from floater I decided, as you all saw, that it was a thread-shit thing to do, and boxed it to shield it from the view of people who might be offended. I thought, at the time, that someone would have to make a decision to be insulted, so I did not issue a warning. I do think, however, that it would have been a good idea for me to write in the body of the post that it contained graphic, offensive content. I did not think, at the time, that the posting of an insulting link rose to the level or a “warnable” offense.
Again, I’m sorry that my decision inflamed people and caused such strong emotions. Since I see my job as mainly as trying to keep things on an even keel, I’m disappointed that I didn’t, in this instance.

Warning still seems light to me. It seems like he went out of way to piss off and gross out everyone in the thread and break a bunch of rules at once. Suspension would be more appropriate.

If someone pulled something like that at a board I ran (and I have run boards before), even with a spotless record, I’d suspend his ass for at least a month, and require an apology for the link to be his first post upon coming off suspension. Being a jerk is one thing, and while I can’t rightfully describe what this is what with this not being the pit, it goes far beyond jerk level.
I feel bad for anyone who clicked on the link. What has been seen cannot be unseen. (totally work safe, life safe link, I promise)
I’m fine that things have now been taken care of, but for the future I really think the board needs to invest/look into a Bat signal type of device. As for the symbol, I think a silhouette of Slug Signorino’s caricature of Cecil as a turkey in a mortarboard is prefect.

I said this in the pit thread, but I think it needs to be said here as well. It was just a failed joke. It failed spectacularly, true, but what it boils down to is:
“What do I do with this cat?”
“Let’s eat it!”
It was the wrong place and wrong time for that joke, but the only thing Floater is really guilty of is not understanding his audience. He should have known better, or at the very least told the tasteless jerk better. Good God, there is a place and time for that kind of thing, but that ain’t it. I support the warning because stupidity does not negate the “don’t be a joke” rule. However, let’s not forget forget Hanlon’s Razor: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity. "
