This thread reminded me of an entry I found in my old Funk & Wagnall’s:

banca cava

And the definition given was that it was an instrument of torture. Nothing more specific.

If I’m interpreting correctly, it means “empty chair” in Spanish.

I’m reminded of some James Bond novel or other in which Bond was strapped pantsless to a chair with the wicker seat cut out, and he was whacked repeatedly in the genitalia by a guy with a tennis racquet.

But I don’t know. Anyone out there ever hear of a “banca cava”?
