Many of the banks don’t have the mortgages anymore.l They packaged them off in the securities they sold. The banks got into “robo signing” to pretend they had ownership. they don’t want that to get out more than it has. The whole real estate market is s disaster created by the big banks.
The banks don’t want to drop the value of the homes. Some will reluctantly lower mortgage rates to keep the owner in the home. But they still want the assets side of their ledgers to show the elevated price. That is what makes it look like they are so solvent. That is part of why they can reward themselves with huge salaries and bonuses.
