Banking Poll

Sampiro’s post got me to thinking about my banking habits period, when I realized that if it wasn’t for the ATM machine occasionally running out of envelopes I wouldn’t have set foot inside my bank since I opened the account. They’re even remedying that; the branch of my bank closest to my Mom’s doesn’t take envelopes you stick checks you’re depositing into a feeder and it reads it an puts a copy on your receipt, how cool it that? Back to the point, I’ve had this account since 2004 and I’m pretty sure I’ve only been inside one of their braches four times in all that time. How about you?

Like you, I rarely go inside the bank; much of my banking is done at the ATM, drive-thru, or night-deposit. I have been in there more than four times in a year, however - doing different things which require it (taking out/paying off loans, paperwork for a stolen checkbook).

My husband never does drive-thru, ATM, or night deposit. He takes his paycheck inside the bank every time and gets pocket money. I found out recently that he didn’t even know that there were pre-printed deposit slips in the back of the checkbook! The teller does all that for him. So, he’s in the bank at least every other week.

Well, I work at a bank, so… I go quite often.

As for spending money, however, it’s almost always the ATM.

I go in quite a bit these days. I sometimes need to do complicated stuff with my finances, and the guys at the bank are pretty good at walking me through it.

My free checking charges me for more than x number of in person visits per year. I doubt I have been in the bank more than 2 times in any calendar year. My pay is direct deposited, my bills are paid on line and my cash comes via ATM. Even my car loan was secured online.

I think I’m going to win this one (or at least tie). I’ve never been in my bank. It’s a credit union for military members and their families. I joined back in '98 when I was still in the Air Force. They are headquartered in San Antonio and don’t even have a branch here in Denver. I’ve heard they have one in Colorado Springs, but I’ve never been inspired enough to find it.

I go into my credit union just a few times a year. Our paychecks are direct deposit, and I pay most bills online. I almost never use an ATM, either; I can get cash with my debit card at just about every store I shop in, and there’s never a fee.

Well, since I use an internet bank, I NEVER go into a branch. Deposits are mailed in, paycheck is automatically deposited, and withdrawals are at ATMs.

J.

I might end up going in around six times a year. If I’ve gotten a check or chunk of cash for some reason and don’t have my checkbook with me I’ll go in to deposit it.

I would just use the ATM, as that doesn’t require a deposit slip, but I had a bad experience last year when some cash I deposited in the ATM showed as posted in my online ledger, but it wasn’t really, as I found out when I drew on it a couple days later. The account went negative and the ladies on the phone were vary condescending and nasty to me when I asked to have the overdraft charges reversed, though they did reluctantly do so. They claimed I should have known better, while I claimed I couldn’t have, as that was the first time I had deposited into an ATM.

I 've since ordered a book of preprinted deposit slips so I can always use the deposit drop instead. It won’t post until someone handles it, but by Og at least it will be posted “for real.”

The only time I go inside is when I’m getting a loan or need something notarized – maybe once a year.

How long have we had ATM’s? 80’s?

Ditto, rarely to never.

I go inside the bank every week or so to deposit checks. I get cash from ATMs, but would rather do deposits with a teller. I do use the drive-up as long as it’s quicker than going inside (I’m surprised at how many people will spend 10 minutes idling at the drive-up when you can park, go in, and get out in five).

I’m in my credit union maybe once every other month if that. My paychecks are direct deposited and I pull money every so often at an ATM but more often as cash back at the grocery. I think the only time I really go inside is when my Tootsie Roll bank is full of change and I want to turn it into paper or deposit it.

I only go in to get something from my safety deposit box (doesn’t anyone else have one?) never for transactions.

We have a business account (in addition to our normal personal account) that generates some very large checks from my wife’s self-owned company, so I always do those transactions (deposit/balance/transfer/withdraw) with an actual teller. So I walk into the bank at least once a month.

What is this cash thing of which eveyone speaks? Kidding; I hadn’t considered that either, if it wasn’t for my kids I’d probably never use cash.

What’s funny to me is that my Hubby never uses plastic. Always with the cash. It’s a blue-collar thing around here - people even buy big-ticket things like appliances and cars with cash.
