Banned from Napster: now what?

Is there a way to get back on? I have tried uninstalling it from my computer, downloading it again, and trying to start over, but they seem to know who I am before I log in the first time (which is a little disconcerting in itself). Trying to find MP3s anywhere else is hellish. What can I do? Can I do anything?

I got banned because of that whole Metallica thing, if you’re wondering.

I’ve never had much luck with Napster. Even when I had it up and running, it was very hard to get anything since I’m on a 56k modem and always had a bunch of people trying to download from me while I was trying to get anything.

I’ve never tried newsgroups, but that’s a pretty good option I hear. I just never bothered to figure out how to convert the binaries.

I use an FTP Client. WSFTP and CuteFTP are supposed to be good, but I like BulletProof FTP. I think all three have 30 day trial versions. I do most of my searches through http://www.oth.net but there are many others out there.

If you’ve never used an FTP client, the first thing you have to know is what a ratio site is (which most MP3 sites are). A 1:1 ratio site is even trade. You upload a 3 meg file, you get 3 megs in credit to download. Most sites are 1:2 (3 meg upload = 6 meg download) or better. I’m sure you get the idea.

When you sign on to an FTP site, the first thing that will show up in the FTP client is the welcome message. Make sure you read it! It’s the rules to follow by the site owner. Everyone has their own rules.

As far as the Napster thing, it’s probably a registry setting that does not get deleted when the program is uninstalled. If you’re not familliar with editing your registry, find someone who is. I try to avoid giving advice on this because you can totally bork your machine if you screw up the registry. Plus, I don’t know a helluva lot about Napster.

Hope this helps. Happy MP3 hunting!

Bitchin’! Thanks a lot man.

My pleasure. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. There don’t seem to be a lot of people here interested in the topic.

I emailed you a copy of my napster registry fix, if anyone else wants it just hollar. Its a registry file, just import it using the ‘regedit’ program.

Check for cookies left on your machine by NAPSTER also. They’ll be under TEMP DIR or TEMP FILES.

Explicit directions can be found at:

http://www.zeropaid.com/mooch/unstall.shtml

Another way is Cute MX, a Napster clone. But then again you have other people trying to download from you. Which is what you are trying to do to them.

Actually, there is. It’s a bit complicated though.

I was never banned, but it when I tried this method I was able to completely change my identity.

I shouldn’t give the details in case I get in trouble, but, my clue to you is changing a certain key in the napster registry.

Ooops, just re-read previous threads. They have the answer. Follow it, it works.

Apologizing for previous thread :o

Urghh, this was/is what I was refering to, in case the other suggestions above don’t work.

Taken from the ‘What is the registry’ posted in this forum:

“The Registry is a way for Windows to categories and store all the technical information given to a specific program/extension. What the guys on the radio were talking about… for example… is tweaking the Regedit for Napster. People who were banned from Napster could very easily change some of the information in the registry in order to become a member again. Other common examples of RegEdit tweaking consists of removing some of the desktop right-click options (Which some programs annoying add upon installation) and other preferences to change some annoying windows features. If you want some useful examples goto - http://www.annoyances.org - This site basically has it all.”

For you guys who use Napster on a 56k or lower…

As mentioned above, it is kinda hard to download some music while other people are downloading your music. Well there is a simple solution to this problem and it will also prevent you from getting banned like in the Metallica fiasco.

Simple do not allow users to download songs!

Go to preferences and in there you will see a line that says “Maximum number of uploads = 10” Simply change that to 0 and your problem is solved. The only thing is that when you start the program you get a dialog box that says you have set the Max uploads to 0. All you do is click OK and you are set.

During the Metallica hunt, the company who recorded all 300,000 of those names simply did searches for Metallica music. The people who were sharing Metallica music were the ones who got banned. So by not sharing anything you can not get caught from that method of detection. Of course someone could set up a fake server and record as you download from them, but there is nothing you can do about that.

And yes I realize this is the opposite of what Napster is about, but I did not say this was the “right” thing to do while stealing music, it just makes the whole experience faster and safer.

cheers!

If I want to eat bread, I go to a store and buy some. If I want to get on a bus and go somewhere, I pay the driver. If I want to see a movie, I pay the cinema some money. If I want to put some gas in my car, I have to pay for that too.

WHY SHOULD MUSIC BE DIFFERENT?

If you want to debate whether or not it is “right” to use Napster go to GD. The program is here to say, regardless of what the gov’t or music industry, or anyone else does it stop it. This technology is part of the world now. And as far as your analogy goes…

If I want bread, I go to the store my friend works at and have him give me some.
If I want to go some where I either walk or get a ride from a friend.
If I want to see a movie, I have another friend of mine get me in for free.
Everyone does things different.

Strider

You say everybody does things different(sic)

Yet you do things just like the majority of internet music users–illegally. Not different, just a clone.

You say the program is here to say(sic).

Guess again.

P.S. I hope you don’t run out of friends. Otherwise, it sounds like your existance might end.

Actually you can unban yourself from napster, the info is at http://www.ragen.org and also you can prevent people from downloading from you by setting your maximum downloads per user to 0.

More… napigator at http://www.napigator.com lets you pick which server you conect to with ping times, and total users

Actually sam I do not use Napster, nor have I ever. I have friends who use it and I have seen it used, but I would not use it myself. Why? I do not think it is right to use Napster because it is stealing, plain and simple. The problem I had was that the OP was about how to un-ban yourself from Napster and this guy comes in and starts preaching. If he wants to do that then he needs to move his ass to GD.

And would you care to place a bet on whether or not the program is here to stay? As everyone one else has said, this is the same situation that arouse when tape players cames out. Napster may close and it’s server shut down, but there will always be another one waiting to take it’s place. You have seen the popularity of this program. Do you seriously believe that if/when Napster closes all those millions of people will say, “Damn, that sucks, guess I have to buy CD’s now” ??? Don’t be so naive. No matter what security measures anyone puts up, crackers always win. Just yesterday it was reported that the Dreamcast encryption had been broken. Nothing can stop this kind of shit. And people going around and preaching about the immorality of it are wasting their breathe and are just as annoying as those bible-thumpers that come to my door and wake my ass up on Sunday.

Anyway, Sorry about hijacking this thread. I will not post anymore on this subject.

And no, my existance will not end if I lose my friends. I have a life, unlike many people.

Thank you and Good Night!

Strider, you publicly acknowledge that you’re a thief. You publicly state that you have a lack of morals and a lack of concern for the people you’re stealing from. Does this concern you? Or do you actually find these statements amusing or manly in some way?

Strider ALREADY SAID IN HIS PREVIOUS F*CKING POST:

So I have cleared that up again.

And if you are refering to my three little lines about how I do not pay for stuff let me elaborate for you.

“If I want bread, I go to the store my friend works at and have him give me some.”
This is because my friend and his dad run a cafe/bakery and they give me the bread for free. It is not stolen, it is given as a gift because my family and his are close.

“If I want to go some where I either walk or get a ride from a friend.”
Nothing immoral about this is there? Of course my standards may not be up to yours.

“If I want to see a movie, I have another friend of mine get me in for free.”
That is because it is part of the benefits of the employees that they can see movies for free and they are allowed to bring up to two friends.

So to clarify:

“you publicly acknowledge that you’re a thief.”
Nope. Never said that. Try again.

“You publicly state that you have a lack of morals”
I did? Exactly where. Show me a f*cking quote.

“and a lack of concern for the people you’re stealing from.”
Really? I do not remember saying that. God, it must be the heat in this room…

Do NOT put words in my mouth and do not assume that because I thought that guy’s preaching annoying that I must be an evil sinner who steals and is immoral and does not care about anything or anyone.

Is this clear enough for you or do you need more?!?!

Has anyone tried Gnutella? I understand that that particular program is not open to the legal assaults that Napster is currently not enjoying, because it does not operate from a central site.

Incidentally, the music industry appears to be at a loss to explain why CD sales have ballooned in the past two years, despite the ridiculous pricing.

Some have argued that it is because people are using MP3s to evaluate albums before they buy them.

I think it would be interesting to see how the price of a full-length album has changed over the years, measured in constant dollars. Anyone care to give it a go?
