Every time I’ve ever emailed snopes, or communicated with him in anyway, he’s been nothing but polite and helpful.
Of course, he gets a lot of stupid emails from a lot of stupid people, and I wouldn’t be in the least bit surprised if he responds accordingly.
I’ve never experienced that either. The whole board has been nothing but friendly and helpful to me.
It’s interesting how different people perceive different MBs…I guess that’s why there are thousands (millions) to be found. Diversity is the spice of life and all that.
Only one? I just went and re-read the thread, and I see four. Sheduck did research it, and posted her findings, Tigress backed up the findings by stating that she had had such plates when younger. DizzyLizard, and Bufungla both posted stating their understanding that the picture seemed of questionable, after Doghouse’s post, but before snopes’ reply, thus I would not consider their posts brown-nosing, after “Snopes got pissy”. There are many times that people read threads, and may understand, and question the veracity of the claim in the OP, but decide not to join in the discussion. Seeing as how Sheduck verified it’s authenticity early on, there really was no need for further discussion by other’s who thought it might be a fake. That is, until Doghouse’s post, and Doc J’s subsequent post. Is it a requirement that all board members who question the authenticity of something speak up in every thread? That obviously would be tedious, and serve no point, so why is it, then, that when the motive is questioned, and others do say “me too”, they are automatically deemed brown-nosers? What is there to gain by brown-nosing snopes? Nothing that I can think of.
My actual point is that Snopes’ defense seem like total BS. If anyone but Snopes posted that picture there would be no “implied” question- my feeling is that he did, in fact, post the picture as “ha ha, look at the funny picture”- which is exactly what he bitched at another poster for doing.
It’s his sandbox, he can kick the neighbor kids out if he wants to- it just seems like a damned shame considering how informative the main site is that the MB sucks.
But, like I said before and anybody who reads the board regularly knows, the vast, vast majority of threads started by snopes are questions, implied or otherwise, sent by readers. The first time I saw a similiar OP, it confused me too. It was an UL and snopes didn’t put a disclaimer along the lines of “This is an email someone sent me.” Instead of freaking out and asking snopes why he’s obviously so stupid or calling him a hypocrite, I waited to see how others responded and lurked a bit more. After I did so, it became obvious what was going on.
grendel You are almost certainly incorrect about your surmise.
He probably should have posted a comment with the picture, and then we wouldn’t be having this discussion. He explained why he didn’t post a comment with the picture. It’s a shame that he didn’t. I would put it down to his trying to moderate a board single-handedly that has gone way beyond his wildest dreams and not having enough time to post commentary to every nook and cranny of the board. It is out of control, IMHO.
