I’m a little confused on the subject of banning. What does one have to do to get banned? If someone is banned, are they denied the right to post any more, while their existing posts are redesignated “BANNED”? What prevents a banned member from simply re-registering under another user name and recreating the chaos that got them banned in the first place?
I’m sorry if this is covered in an FAQ, but I couldn’t find it.
Thanks for you help!
sometimes they do register under another name, then they get banned again.
I’ll answer your questions. This stuff has been discussed a lot of times, but I realize it’s not always easy to find. If you have a question about the message board, just go to the ATMB forum (as you have) and page through the threads from, say, the past couple of months. You should find your answer there.

To be banned, you need to be a jerk, consistently. Usually, one jerky comment won’t be enough to get you kicked off, but it depends on the comment. Do enough of them, though, and you’re sure to go.

Nothing technically prevents the banned member from returning, and I’m sure it’s happened. But if they come back and post a jerky comment again, they’ll be gone again anyway.
Break the rules, i.e. post a stream of insults in a forum that’s not the BBQ Pit, post advertisements at the board, create multiple names, disrupt the board so much that we figure it’s not worth the trouble it would take us to moderate your posts if you remained at the SDMB, etc…
Yes.
Depending on the situation, we can try to prevent the person from re-registering. If they do manage to re-register and continue in the same behaviour, they get banned again.
Questions answered, so I’ll close this thread now, because this is the type of subject that will attract the troublesome posters that are its subject. If you have any more questions on banned posters you can e-mail a staff member.
