Question For TubaDiva

Hello TubaDiva,

Being a fairly stable person who’s not likely to suddenly start screaming at people or uttering wild threats, I figure I may never know the answer to this question unless I ask:

What happens to someone who’s banned? Obviously, banned folks can still cruise through here and read the posts, but what happens when they try to post? Does a banned person type out his/her latest rant and hit the “post” button and then receive a “banned” message?

What happens if s/he tries to register under another name? What about someone who uses an IP that’s been banned due to abusive postings from another user?

Just curious about life on the dark side.

A black van pulls up in front of the offender’s house, shadowy figures climb out and go inside the house . . . I’m not sure what they do in there, but we never have any problems with that person ever again. EVER again.

Just kidding. Dammit.

When a banned person attempts to make a posting, instead of the post screen they get a screen that says their posting privileges have been revoked by management. So they know it’s not a technical glitch.

If they attempt to register under another name, if/when we catch 'em, we throw them out again. I say “if/when,” because usually problem children can’t stop being problem children under any screen name and they get found out pretty quickly. (That being said, we’re big believers in rehabilitation and always hold out hope for change; we have at least a couple people around here that shaped up into fine members of the online community after a bumpy start.)

We do not throw anybody out for typos or other errors, even errors in fact, especially if you agree to agree with other folks on most everything else. It’s okay to disagree, to debate, to argue, to discuss. That’s what it’s all about here. It’s not okay to abuse the board, the management, or fellow members of the Teeming Millions.

All of are a keystroke from disaster and none of us are perfect. (That does not guarantee you won’t get yelled at, though.)

If you read over the registration agreement (you can go read it again, just click on “register” in the upper right hand corner of any SDMB page) read the FAQ (ditto) and have a little observation on the board, it’s quite easy to get the rules of the road. The Golden Rule is a good way to be too; do unto others is a useful rule of thumb.

For the great majority of our forum members, none of this will ever be an issue, except to ask us, “would you PLEASE do something about _____?” Those “_______” are few. It’s the obnoxious 1% that makes it a trial for the other 99%.

Cecil said it first, “Don’t Be a Jerk.” Live by that and we’re gonna all be fine.

PS Even if you didn’t read the registration agreement, if you’re a registered member, it still applies to you.

What?? No guarantees?!??!
