So can I take your failure to address my question as an admission of the fact that you have not cried in indignation over examples of true racist expressions. Or should I just assume you think that I am just a little worthless prick, not worthy of your time?
I know. I did a preview before I posted, saw that it had been pointed out to you twice, but I STILL decided to post just in case you need to be reminded how embarrassing this thread is.
I’d like for you to find one thread on this board where you have joined me in decrying something as racist. For the life of me, I cannot remember a single instance when you’ve been a staunch defender of black people. I remember you joining the anti-PC, anti-offenderati, anti-racial hypersenstivity bandwagon, but I don’t ever rememer you ever pitting someone or something as racist before. Is my memory incorrect?

I looked at the video again. I’m beginning to think I might have been mistaken. There is a flash of annoyance across her face before she stands up. Originally, I had attributed it to Lipton’s rudeness of constantly talking over her. But perhaps her intention was to call to attention just how stupid his question was. I noticed this time that there is a black woman in the audience, and she was quite frankly howling with laughter. I think I should retract at least the stringency of my attack on her. Hell, nevermind. This ain’t the hill I want to die on. I’ll give it to her. I was wrong.
OK. Either this has been the subtlest joke thread I’ve ever come across, or it’s been a fascinating study in surreality.
Good. It’s not just me who was thinking this.
This has got to be the first thread where I think all the emoticons are appropriate.
 :o
Definitely the latter. He ignores lots of people who disagree with him. He spouts off with ad hominem attacks and insults, but if you engage him and point out the absolute lunacy of his problem, or insult him, and he feels above you, you just go unnoticed.
Not a huge loss, really.
Sam
I’m pleased to see this. Otherwise I was going to have to tell you the story about how I referred to a black man as a darkie and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it.
OH, SHIT! If that’s true either you are black or he was a really good friend. At least in the US you will generally get the shit beat out of you (rightly so) for a statement like that unless one of the two options above applies.
askepic, you’d be a really great person to challenge to a bar bet.
Yes, but if he’d been a Hispanic woman instead of a black man, and Ann Coulter had been there and had called her a wetback bitch, then you probably would’ve screamed “RACISM!” Now do you understand? Liberal hypocrite.
Wanna bet?
Thank you, few dudes ever admit they are wrong. Still, was it the Rice Krispies?
It was the logic. It’s always the logic.
do you take everything you hear and read in the world as being completely literate?
Y’know, I was thinking of berating you for your first post in this thread, in which you assumed the worst about someone and posted obnoxious things about them before you had all the facts or thought things through, in which you didn’t give the person the benefit of the doubt.
But then I remembered that in this same thread I committed the same offense.
My apologies for my over-harshness: although I think my position was correct, it was bad form for me to react the way I did.
Daniel
Don’t you believe it, brother.
flashes peace sign
That’s okay. Nothing quite spazzes me out as bigotry. You’ll recall my meltdown over Matt Shepard and Fred Phelps. I don’t melt down anymore, but it still pisses me off. I overreacted in this instance as much as or more than you did. I do wish she had made herself more clear. She’s right that her position increases her responsibility. When much is given, much is expected.
I think I agree with you that bigotry is a pretty big fuckup. However, I try (not always successfully) to give people the benefit of the doubt in proportion to the size of the suspected fuckup. Precisely because racism is such a serious charge, I try not to level it unless there’s no other reasonable explanation–and I try to look for other reasonable explanations first.
Daniel
I try, too. I just don’t always succeed. I remember defending the Thurmond family recently, but it wasn’t until I had read about 20 articles on the matter. Anyway, thanks for the steady advice.

Well, I guess I can discount Jodi, much as the extreme judges are discounted in a diving competition. Disagreement with me seems to be her default position. I think I’m safe to assume that whatever I might have said, including the exact opposite of what I did say, her position would have opposed mine.

I hate to break it to you, but I don’t care enough about you or your opinion to work that hard. Shoot, I don’t care enough about anyone to work that hard, and that includes people I actually know.
But you might want to give some thought to the inherent arrogance of believing that I (or anyone) would disagree with you just for the sake of disagreeing, as opposed to disagreeing with you for the more obvious reason – that I think you’re wrong. As you have now admitted you might have been. To imagine that I would waste my time posting merely to oppose you is to imagine that you are far more important in my life than you actually are.
You climb up on your cross all by yourself and you manage to nail youself up there. Don’t give me the credit, and don’t give me the blame.
