Barstools in Restaurants

Today while eating at a Schlotzsky’s, I noticed that along with regular tables and chairs, there were higher, bar-level tables/counters with barstool-height chairs. I’ve seen this in other fast-food restaurants, and now wondered why.

My husband thought that perhaps it saved space, but I couldn’t see that. I thought it was some subliminal, psychological thing, that maybe the variance in table heights was more visually pleasing that a boring one-size-fits-all.

Or is it simply because some people like sitting that high?

Think of it this way:

You sit at a booth primarily to eat and maybe have a drink.

You sit at one of these tables primarily to drink and maybe have some food.

It’s easier than trying to eat food right on the bar but doesn’t separate you from the ‘bar scene’ (standing up, moving around, talking to people etc.) as much as a booth does.
