Well, April is over, and the Dodgers have been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. :smack:
The Brewers have been beating up on the Cubs, and even when the Padres manage a comeback like today’s, they still sit mired at the bottom of the weakest division in pro ball.
Is anybody’s team living up to expectations? (Yankee fans can just shut up.)
I’m a Tigers fan. Yes, they’re moving towards what I had expected with the young talent we have.
In all four of my leagues, I drafted Chris Shelton in the last round or picked him up in free agency before the first game. I had faith before the religion existed.
Assuming we’re talking about the real major leagues, not fantasy baseball (which does not interest me in the least):
The Athletics are 12-12, but in first place heading to Anaheim. And they’re really not pitching or hitting all that well. Once they get it all together–and they will; too much talent and good management for a .500 season–I will really like their chances for postseason play this year.
The team of my youth, the Phillies, are middling around, not really doing that much, about 6 games behind the Mets (who have not convinced me yet). I suspect their window of opportunity closed a year or two ago. Shrug. What are ya gonna do?
What you just witnessed, my friend, was May coming two innings early, with a side of deja vu all over again. I suggest you buy your Petco Park playoff tickets early.
The Blue Jays are 12-11 despite playing good teams for almost the entire season so far and having none of the starters pitch as well as they’re capable. I’m happy so far, but May will be another amazingly tough schedule - nothing but contenders except for two series. I expect a strong summer push; the team starts playing losers in June.
Biggest hero so far? Vernon Wells.
Biggest goat? Josh Towers: 0-5, pounded in every start.
ARGH! Izzy is slowly killing us all. Anyway, we’re doing a lot better than I would expect with Rolen not playing, the outfield not hitting their weight and adventuresome relief efforts. Albert just rules.
Plus, the new stadium is very cool, with some glitches that can be worked out. Saw the Cards beat the Cubs last Friday and enjoyed it a lot.
Yankees moved into first yesterday {by.005 pct points}. The Offense is explosive and the pitching is coming together. Defense is shaky, especially the Corners of the Outfield.
Team OBA is .396 which is amazing. RedSox and Dodgers have somehow left more men on base. If we got one more consistent starter (Pavano, Small or Clemens) we would begin to really roll. Scott Proctor has step up strong the first month and Rivera is settling in. Farnsworth is looking great. Sturtz looks pretty bad but Dotel is getting closer and should make the Bullpen really strong.
The two lefties are doing their job. Randy Johnson has been amazingly inconsistent and yet has 4 wins. Moose has been awesome and has only 4 wins.
Wang & Chacon are looking better each start. Wright stinks, but no one is surprised.
The Captain had his best April ever and Giambi is all the way back. If Matsui and A-Rod start hitting consistently the team will probably average over 7 runs per game. Johnny Damon had no problems adjusting to NY, he is a natural fit. Cano looks great. Sheffield is batting very well and just has to not break himself.
Posada is off to another good start hitting. Bernie Williams is still cold and the Yanks are making a lot of base running mistakes.
It looks like Guidry and Kerrigan are making a good tandem as Pitching and Bullpen Coach.
I got curious by this statement. Dodgers are 1 game below .500 and only 3 out.
As the Rockies lead the division, we can ignore them and the Dodgers are only 1½ behind the Giants. If Bonds goes down, the Giants will fade. So the Dodgers still have a chance in the worst Division in Baseball.
**AnyRose ** & RealityChuck: I am hoping for another Subway series.
Of course I am hoping for the same results as the last one.
RickJay: I hope your team take the wildcard, knocking Boston out of the Wildcard of course.
I would have liked a sweep in Atlanta, but 2 out of 3 was still pretty sweet. Plus it was sweet to actually see Beltran play. If he really get’s going this is one hell of a lineup. Now if Vic Zambrano can just learn how to pitch, I’m quite happy with this year’s team.
Until something goes horribly wrong. ::knocks on wood::
Did you see yesterday’s game? They were up 5-0 in the middle of the 9th, against a team that hadn’t scored 5 runs in the previous 3 games. They lost, 6-5 in 10 innings. I can read the writing on the wall.
Luckily, I like 4 of the 5 teams in the NLWest. My heart belongs to the Dodgers, and the Padres are my second choice, but the Rockies and Diamondbacks are ok, too. Anybody but the Giants.
At the request of my wife, I must add: Go Redsox!!!
Albert’s not gonna see another strike between now and 2010.
Izzy’s nickname has a double meaning now: it’s shorter than Isringhausen, and every time he takes the hill we wonder “Is he gonna blow this?”
Something’s up with Reyes. He skipped a start in Memphis, the official site had him listed as the starter yesterday for a little while and Alan Benes has been inserted in the Redbirds’ starting rotation for this week.
My dad grew up in Maryland so from my littlest days I remember cheering for Eddie Murray and Cal- in the early years, when his brother played. So of course I’m still rooting for them. They’re doing okay- every year they seem to call it a “re-building” year and they start out pretty good, but then go downhill after all-stars. Hopefully one of these days the re-building will be over and they’ll be some serious competition in the AL East.
“Would the lady who left her nine kids at Wrigley Field please pick them up immediately? They are beating the Cubs 4-0 in the 7th inning.”–Radio deejay
