Baseball - How's your team doing?

Amen, brother. Amen. They better not hold a fire sale any time soon. I’m SO going to riot if they do.
I don’t get why we can’t spend like the big market teams. We get another good year of baseball, interest goes up, and if Ilitch has any brains, he can parlay that into a good tv contract like the Yankees have done. The fans are there in Detroit, they’re just so pissed off with the product as of recent years.

I was there in 1984!..I was 3 years old, but I was there!

Hopefully not. Still, it saddens me to know that the days of gaining admission to Mets games with a can of soda will soon be over.

In other news, the May Hit Parade is back and better than ever! Jamie Wright saw red when Barry Bonds got hit by a pitch (how can he not get hit when he practically stands on the plate?) and retaliated by hitting Brian Giles in the ass with a fastball in the fourth. Seven runs later, Wright had dished out his revenge and gotten it back in spades–San Diego’s entire lineup proceeded to serve him hot dishes of crow, then Giles came up again (in the same inning) and smoked one right over Jamie’s head. 10-4 Padres.

Since HS, my friends and I have managed to spend many Wednesday evenings at Shea Stadium for the cost of a train ticket. The Mets had/have a deal where you bring in a Pepsi product and gain free admission to a Wednesday game. These deals tend to disappear when teams start doing well.

The Astros are doing ok - 16 and 9. I think that’s better than last year at this time…

You are one lucky man to have been there in '84. I would have been 8 years old, but that’s when I started following the Tigers, and I have stayed with them ever since. This was when I lived in Alabama mind you, so there weren’t tons of Tigers supporters around. I lived through those glory years of the 80’s, then got stuck with everything since then.

I agree about the marketing of the team. I think Detroit is a great city for sports, and the Tigers definitely have the support they need in place. If they can put a couple of seasons together, then things should be fine.

I’m assuming you are in the city still, so I’ll have to let you know when I come up for a game this summer.

That’s thoroughly awesome. How early do you have to get there to get in? I mean, they have to stop taking in can fans at a certain point, right? Does anyone actually buy tickets on Wednesdays? Is there restricted seating for the can fans?

The only thing like that I’ve ever seen here–and we’ve had some awful teams while I’ve lived here!–is that this season you can bring in a wrapper from a two-liter Coke product and for $50 you get four tickets, four hot dogs and four Cokes. Works out to $12.50 a fan for a seat, a dog and a soda. I’ve saved two wrappers so far and I intend to take full advantage of this over the summer with the first three friends I can find who like baseball and (like me) can’t afford to see a game otherwise.

The Yankees have been consistently great since 1994. They still run promotions for Mid-week Night Games where you can get Nosebleed seats for $5. Another deal is the Nose bleed Seat, a Hot dog and a Soda for $10. They realized that it is better to have a fanny in the seat than an empty seat. It’s a great deal. Last year I saw 7 games for $5 a pop and this year I have 8 Mid-week game in the right Field Bleachers. It works out to $12 per ticket but I am eligible for some post season games. WooHoo.
I’ve heard KC had games with $2 seats and $1 hot dogs at least once a year. Baltimore has a Standing room area that is pretty inexpensive.

The Dodgers have “Family-Packs” available for selected Wed/Sun home games. 4 tickets, 4 DodgerDogs, 4 sodas and a parking pass for $52. Outfield bleacher seats are only $11.

silenus, are DodgerDogs really any different from any other hot dog?

I think that’s a bit of an exaggeration. They’ve been consistantly good, staying at or near the top of the pack *most * of the season, but a few times in the last 12 years they have not made it to the playoffs
Whereas the Mets have been **very ** consistant! And it is only this year that they are performing against type, and YAY to that!

Actually, I’m in Buffalo (until late May, at least). It depends if a job scoops me up and takes me somewhere. If not, I go back to Detroit and do a little bit of work and school until something pops up.

I haven’t even BEEN to Comerica Park yet. It’s not Tiger Stadium, dammit. I do believe they’re talking about tearing the old one down because it’s good real estate. I can only hope that the developers are baseball fans with a sense of history.

Lemme know when you’re in the D. We’ll commiserate about the Lions and talk badly about Pacers and Bears fans and wax poetic about Barry Sanders sigh.

Official DodgerDogs are grilled, rather than boiled as most stadium hot dogs are.

Lord, yes! DodgerDogs are ambrosia. The grilling really makes a difference. Although I must say that the Big Friar dogs at Petco are quite yummy.

Rose, actually the Yanks have made it to the Playoffs every year from 95 to 2005 and were leading the AL East in the strike year {1994}. The only failures have been in early outs in some of those years. Failure to make it to the World Series, while tragic, should not subtract from the excellent runs of both the Yanks and the Braves. The Mets have been all over the place, from worst in the Division to World Series contenders in 2000.

We used to get to the park about an hour before the gates opened. For the games that we met our fathers in the city, we would usually grab something to eat first and get there about 30 minutes before the gates opened. We managed to get in the times that we did this but I suspect it was because of opponents who were not particularly dynamic. The cans got you into the bleachers (left field for anyone unfamiliar with Shea) section. People would still buy tickets because, for some reason, most people do not check into the deals. If they were playing an opponent that everyone wanted to see, then our chances of getting in were significantly diminished. In the absolute worst scenario, we would pay about $12 to sit upper deck. The Mets pricing levels mean that it could be lower than that on any given day depending on the opponent. It is hard to complain about $12 though.

I am not a Yankee fan so it should come as no surprise that I was never aware of these promotions. Those are some pretty nice deals though. This thread makes me happy seeing the many ways that baseball has made their seasons more accessible to the fans.

I meant consistantly awful. I’m a Mets fan. We expect the worst of our team and at the same time hope for the best.
Yankees fans always expect the best, that’s why they can’t handle the losses

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays (I really hope they change the name; I recommended The Tampa Bay Thunder) are 11-15, bottom of the AL East.
What a shock

If one more major sports team takes on a name in the singular, I will go on a killing spree.

Just so you know in advance.

You’ll probably be OK, though; I’m sure they’ll catch me before I get that far east.

Did I mention the Dodgers pitcher who gave up five runs in the ninth and gave away the game on Sunday was an ex-Devil Ray? You can take the pitcher out of Tampa, but you can’t take the Devil Ray out of the pitcher.

That sound you hear is Carm6773’s head exploding because you had to mention that.
