Tough one, and probably only complete baseball fanatics will know the answer. I read an article a few months ago in which 2 major league pitchers from the 80s are mentioned as having pitched no-hitters while tripping on acid, as they both recounted later after retiring. For one of them, it was his only career no-hitter. Anyone know either of their names?
Sorry, but this is the sort of completely useless but amusing trivia I simply must possess. At the very least, it will help me the next time I go off on one of my drugs-have-some-benefits rants.
Well, that was quick. Thanks for the info. I guess I was wrong in thinking that it took place in the 80s. But I swear that the article mentioned another pitcher who accomplished the same feat in the 80s. Might be wrong though. I just read Ellis’ account of his dimly remembered 1970 no-hitter and it’s absolutely hilarious.

Another time, Ellis was stoned (grass, not acid) when he decided to start a Pirates game vs. the Reds by hitting every batter. He didn’t get yanked until after plunking Rose, Morgan, and Tolan, then walking Bench in four (all inside), then going 2-0 on Perez. I was listening and couldn’t believe anyone could be so wild.
I doubt there was another. Although in his recent book I’m Not Perfect, Yankee David Wells says he was pretty hung-over from a long night of partying the day he pitched his perfect game.
See, only in baseball can you pitch a perfect game drunk or a no-hitter on acid. Many want stronger drug policies, I say they should encourage drug use to make the games more interesting.
There was a story about Bill Lee starting his day by sprinkling weed on his pancakes, but I can’t remember if he ever played while under the influence.
