MadBum would’ve gotten the win, if Affeldt – who is one of the best setup men in the league – had anything at all. 3 straight singles…and the winning run would’ve been out at the plate if Molina had hung on to the friggin’ ball.
But still, the Giants would be in the hunt, except the Rockies are 7-1 in September. Is this like 2007(?) where they came out of nowhere and got into the Series?
I agree. What’s really amazing is that he could get to 3,000 in the MLB alone even though he didn’t get to the MLB until he was 27.
Jeter is in an 0-for-12 slump right now. But that’s not such a shock given how hot he was for the last two months or so. He’ll get past Gehrig in the next couple of days.
Pretty good day for Wainwright too – 5 hits, 1 BB, 6 K, 0 runs over 7 innings. He’s got a pretty nice curveball. He gets guys to swing at balls as they’re bouncing off home plate.
I am considering hiring Tonya Harding to…uh…meet-and-greet with the Colorado Rockies. These guys just won’t go away! Another comeback win tonight. Six wins in a row. And if the Dodgers lose tonight, they’ll only be 2.5 up on the Rockies. Fortunately, the Giants lost today, so we still have a pretty good lock on at least the wild card, but I’d rather it not be that close.
Just to throw it out there, Pirates are now the losingest team in professional sports history with 17 straight losing seasons. Someday I’ll care about baseball again…
I see the Rockies and Dodgers are trying to keep things interesting in the West. Rangers are right on the tail of the Red Sox for the Wild Card.
Yanks got Gardner back but may have lost David Robertson, a really excellent middle reliever with the second best K/9 ratio in the majors (40+ IP). He is off visiting Dr. Andrews. There is hope he’ll be back. The Yanks are now very likely to win home field advantage and with that they can choose the playoff format they want. They could choose the one that allows for only 3 starters and have Joba in the bullpen. That should be a plus replacement for Robertson if he is not available.
Jeter is on a pace for hits that actually exceeds Pete Roses. Though I doubt he will play as long. But he should be able to get pretty far up the hits list. I believe he is second in hits only to Ichiro since Ichiro joined the majors.
It’s actually brought about an unusual situation: both Dodgers and Giants fans want the same thing right now—for the Rockies to start losing games. The Dodgers want to keep their lead in the division, and the Giants want to stay in touch for the Wild Card.
Congratulations to Jeter on a great achievement. And this also reminds you of how amazing Gehrig was as a player, which gets overshadowed by Ruth and by Gehrig’s famous exit from the game, not to mention his own consecutive games streak. Gehrig got his 2,721 in fewer at bats than Jeter and was also 35 when he retired, and he hit for great power and average in a time of lower scoring. To hold a record like this for 72 years on a team that has seen so many great players is really remarkable. A tip of the hat to Jeter, and here’s hoping to see his 3,000th hit in maybe June or July 2011.
Wow. The Rockies are amazing. Down 1-0 with only three hits through eight innings, facing the Padres closer, they load the bases with two outs. Yorvit Torrealba, down 0-2, works it and finally hits a three run triple.
Eight in a row. Five and a half up in the wildcard race. Two behind the Dodgers for the Division lead.
The life-long Yankee hater in me is compelled to say…did we get this much fuss when the Cardinals career hit record was broken? Or the Red Sox? Or Giants?
