Baseball Thread August 2008

Also, look at some of these incredible numbers for both guys:

Harden
4-1, 1.47 ERA, 8G, 49 IP, 28 H, 70K, 14BB, 0.86 WHIP, .229 OBA

Sabathia
8-0, 1.59 ERA, 10G, 79 IP, 68 H, 74K, 15BB, 1.05 WHIP, .272 OBA

Hell, I might say Harden is the better acquisition, but they’re both of the same league.

Sabathia is going to get some major money next year. I guess the Yankees will be able to afford him, although I think he’d be a better fit with the Dodgers.

Yes, the Harden acquisition was REALLY scary for the rest of the league, because the Cubs already had Zambrano, Dempster and Lilly pitching well. Adding Harden was almost unfair.

In Milwaukee’s case, adding Sabathia was almost more helpful, because after Sheets, they were a bit thinner than the Cubs were. Now, the Brewers have back to back aces, which always is a nice thing to have. Hard to be a good playoff team without a good 1-2 combo.

Still, the Cubs are on the way to the World Series, and the Brewers are on their way home for golf in October.

I think you’re forgetting about the D-Backs.

The D-Backs are going to win the World Series and the Cubs will be talking about Bartman and Billy Goats.

Oh, I’m fairly certain the Brewers will see post-season play. Even if they don’t win the division, the wildcard should come from the Central this year.

As I am reading this thread, the Cubs go from down 8-7, to up 13 - 8. CUBS!!!

Alex Rodriguez is so amazing… in possibly the biggest game of the year for the Yankees, 0 for 5, big mess up in the field, double play with the bases loaded, strike out to end the game. So perfect.

Wanna trade him? I’d be happy to take him off your hands.

Oh, no, I’m definitely a Sox fan. I just love the Right-ness in the world on nights like these.

Just got back from the Phillies game. Amazing whirlwind of fun! (for a Phillies fan.) Great game. The NL East is continuing to be a fun race.

A-Rod won’t have the chance to blow games in the postseason this year, so he’s getting an early start.

Blowing a 7 run lead is not my definition of fun, but who could have seen it coming. I mean it isn’t like Pedro has any history of faltering after he reaches 90 or so pitchers. Plus, we used ace reliever Luis Ayala, a guy who’s ERA was just south of 6:00 for the Nationals this year, to close out a one run game in a battle for first place. How could that fail? I know Heilman isn’t great, but he is the best we got. Why wasn’t he pitching in the ninth? And why can’t Minaya find somebody to trade for who is better than Luis Ayala?

I was going to write a response to this, but I find that the only words that will come off of my keyboard are interations of the words “fuck” and “shit.” So let’s just say: Word.

When I looked up at the pitch count board I was pretty surprised (and happy) that they had allowed Pedro up over 100 pitches. I have to say the Mets Manuel’s handling of pitchers is a little bit suspect. In this game he seemed to leave Pedro in a little bit too long. The last game I went to Santana pitched and shut the Phillies down. Manuel took him out in the 9th, and the Phillies hit the reliever around to win the game. What, Santana couldn’t pitch to three more batters? Silly.

Having said that. While I see that some mistakes were made, I think you have to give the Phillies a lot of credit for grinding it out and keep pushing to come back in that game. And, even more credit to the Phillies bullpen for keeping them in a game that surely seemed out of hand.

Both teams exhibited some amazing defensive plays. That was pretty impressive.

God, the Blue Jays are a bunch of useless tits with the bats, huh? On the plus side, every Tampa Bay win makes it increasingly likely that one or both of the Red Sox and Yankees will miss the playoffs.

Jose Bautista just struck out. I realize they got him cheap, but it’s unclear to me as to why the Jays needed him. This is a team with an absolute army of mediocre righthanded-hitting infielders, and they went out and got themselves a mediocre righthanded-hitting infielder. What Bautista brings to the table they did not already have, I cannot imagine.

The Tamp victory also illustrates how stupid many announcers and sportswriters are. When both Evan Longoria and Troy Percival went down with injuries I actually heard and read people say “Well, looks bad for the Rays now, they’ll miss the postseason because of this.” Uh, you really think they’ve been playing .600 ball because of two guys?

It was Tampa Bay’s 80th win, the first time in team history they’ve won 80 games. In fact, they’d never won more than 70 before.

Tampa are doing quite well. They will be worthy opponents to lose to the Cubs in the Series.

Do either the D-backs or Dodgers want to win? Both teams have had horrible weeks. Arizona has some serious bullpen issues.

Here’s Melvin’s sorry excuse for Brandon Lyon’s performance.

*Melvin, though, sees things a bit differently. He looks at Lyon’s last six appearances and notices that of the five in which he struggled, none were save situations and all were at home. The one road game was in Colorado, and maybe not coincidentally, it was a save situation.

“I think it’s been more of a home-road situation for him than a save-not save situation,” Melvin said. *

Umm, you should do better at home and blowing games, even if not in a save situation, is not acceptable. The D-backs should have tried to get Huston Street. I"m sure he could have been obtained reasonably.

This weekend gives us the first real opportunity in a while to see just how good the Cubs are. Looking forward to the answer. I traditionally never get excited about the Cubs until September; Sept. 1 will dawn with some true indication of their mettle.

Game 1 to the Cubs!! (Boy, have they been leaving it til late a lot lately!!)

Dude.

Dude.

I watched the game at my mom’s tonight. If it were my own TV, I would have thrown the remote through it.

Between this and last night, I am very, very, very angry.
