Baseball Thread May 2008

Actually they did talk about the transition in the off-season, during spring training and several times during the season. Both Cashman and Joe G. I listen to Joe G. every Thursday on Mike and the Mad Dog and Cash goes on with Michael Kaye quite often. A Google news search should yield many hits also.

Eat it, Cleveland. Eat it hardcore.

When come back, bring offense.

(That’ll teach you to bribe the umps on Opening Day.)

I can’t believe my White Sox are still in first. Thank Shoeless Joe the Tigers and Tribe have fallen off the face of the earth. Keep that streak going, wootah!

In Mariners news, the Seattle International Film Festival begins today. Pity it only runs until four weekends from now.

Do you feel that? On the back of your neck? That’s the Dodgers, baby. We’re comin’ hard, and we’re comin’ for you! Only 2.5 games back now. I think our two teams are going to be battling for it all year.

I know we had a discussion about this in last month’s thread, but Blake DeWitt continues to impress both offensively and defensively. Last I heard (two nights ago), he was leading all rookies in batting average. He’s currently sporting a .325 with 23 RBIs, and he’s been pretty solid (and, at times, outstanding) at 3rd. Meanwhile, Nomar’s injuries remain nagging and it doesn’t sound like he’s coming back particularly soon. Which is fine with me.

Also, there is lots of buzz that Clayton Kershaw is finally being called up this weekend since he was pulled from his last start after only one inning. I can’t wait to see this guy’s curveball in person.

It must be cool to be a fan of a team that has good hitters coming out of the minors. Isn’t it fun to watch young hitters develop?

Here’s a full list of all the really good hitting prospects the Blue Jays have above A-ball:

I just heard that several starters are blaming Kenji Johjima for their problems as he calls too many breaking balls. Have you heard anything else about this? Do you think it might be true?

I take it you might not be completely satisfied with the current management team of the Toronto Bluejays. Is that fair to say? Hey you know, it is my team that is in last, not yours.

Travis Snider is a very good hitting prospect, currently in double A I believe. I’m sure someday soon he will get 25 at bats to prove himself in the majors.

Apparently, my “maybe I wasn’t paying attention” quip turned out to be true. :o

I hate the way the “Sword of Damocles” is hanging over Willie right now. This is the kind of BS thing that George Steinbrenner use to pull. I thought your owners were above these kind of tactics.

If I were willing to talk about baseball, which I’m not, I would definitely agree with you. It’s ridiculous. Either you fire him or you don’t. At this point he seems to have lost the team, and it’s not like his record is all that sterling, so if they think he needs to go, fine. But just do it, for God’s sake, or stop fluttering around with the not-returning-calls and the Omar-is-going-to-Colorado crap and let the man manage.

It’s funny. I was the biggest Bobby Valentine fan in the world; if they were planning to fire Randolph and hire Bobby V back, I’d be all for it. But that’s not going to happen. It’s going to be Lee Mazzilli or Jerry Manuel or some such, and what have those guys ever done to suggest that they’d be any more effective than Randolph has been so far?

starts to rebutt

can’t think of anything

hangs head in shame

Cubbies, spanking the opposition again. 12 - 3, though admittedly over lowly Pittsburgh. But Zambrano is now 7 - 1, 2.47 ERA. Maybe he finally wants a Cy Young award after all.

I am taking bets on when it is the Cubs will finally let us down this year. My money is on October. :stuck_out_tongue:

Impressive return for Davis as the D-backs wake up finally.

Also, nice to see the A’s beat up on the Red Sox.

Stands next to ZipperJJ

And a .343 batting average.

Yeah, this sucks for Willie. Minaya goes on the road to support him, which is never good, no matter what spiel they lay out. Is it really his fault? I can’t bear to watch the Mets, so someone else tell me if he’s the problem.

On a positive note, the good guys have 4 Ws in a row. Seattle cures many woes…

You’re correct, Snider did get promoted to New Hampshire; I missed that. So they do have one good hitting prospect in AA. I note Snider is hitting just .229 there, so they might be rushing him a bit out of desperation.

The last few days the pitching has been amazing, though. Here’s a statistic for you.

COMPLETE GAMES:
Roy Halladay: 5
The Entire National League: 8

If Roy keeps it up he might actually beat the NL. It’s good not to overwork your pitchers but I think the propensity for overuse of the bullpen is starting to get ridiculous; nine of 16 NL teams have not had any pitcher throw a complete game this year. (I will grant it is easier in the AL to have a pitcher go the distance, since you don’t have to worry about pinch hitting, but Halladay is also personally beating every other team in the AL.) Surely to God Roy Halladay isn’t the only guy around with control good enough to get into the 9th inning without blowing his pitch count.

With a come from behind win fueled by some awful Mariner defense, the Yankees have a 5 game win streak and pulled to .500.

As the Os and Boston lost, the Yanks are out of last and only 5 game back and that is from first place Tampa.

Since A-Rod returned the Yanks have been red-hot and the bats have come alive.

Jorge Posada is getting close and by then the team should be able to make some hay.
