Baseketball: Good idea, or keep it a movie?

Baseketball is a movie about basketball, with baseball rules. If baseketball was an actually sport, would it be succsessful? If you have not seen it you should watch it, then come back and tell what you choose-caution the movie is rated r (you can learn why on a site). I would watch it if it was a actual sport, especially if the Reel Big Fish was the stadium band.

Greetings, and welcome to the Straight Dope Message Board. I hope you’ll enjoy your time here and participate in all sorts of threads, both subtle and mundane.

I’ve decided your thread isn’t really Great Debates material. It’ll be better served in our forum ‘The Game Room’. That’s the forum for sports and other game related questions.

Again, welcome aboard. Glad to have you.

Well, BASEketball has baseball-ish rules, but the parameters of the game as presented in the movie are even less well-defined than those of Quidditch.

I didn’t understand how we were supposed to buy the game was a popular spectator sport - I was willing to suspend my disbelief for the sake of the movie - but it’s really just watching a bunch of guys make free throws. It might be fun to play with a bunch of your buddies and some endlessly variable Calvinball-style rules, but to watch it and maintain a screaming level of excitement… yikes.

IMHO: it’s a helluva lot more interesting than basketball. No, I did not typo, baseball is several rungs above “run to one end and back 200x” on the interestingness scale.

The offensively stereotypical teams would be interesting. It’s not clear if the “psych outs” are mic’ed or what, but without it would be boring. But the initial conceit - that fans are getting fed up with the soulless, corporate nature of sports I don’t see happening any time soon. I mean, we like Moneyball style underdog stories, but also like to see the Yankees trot out millions and millions of dollars of humans out on the field.

Yeah, Calvinball.

For years, I’ve been trying to re-find a SciFi short story I read a long time ago. Written in the 60s or 70s, it imagined a future ultraviolent version of football which featured games between various ethnic/demographic groups. The New York Kikes taking on the San Francisco Faggots in one game, the Cleveland Crackers taking on the Houston Wetbacks in another, all of them beating the holy fuck out of each other with tire irons and whatnot, while the crowds rioted in the stands.

The only virtue of Baseketball would be the hope that it would lead to the tire irons.

Hey now, it wasn’t that un-PC! It was the San Francisco Ferries. Double entendre totally unintended!

And Dallas Felons.

I think the story you’re referring to is “The National Pastime” by Norman Spinrad.

Good point. I never understood how it would cause a player to miss a shot, as those wouldn’t really effect one unless they were short tempered, or we’re highly sensitive. ( not to hijack myself-Also I thought I DID post it in the game room, it was a temporary connection error on my tapatalk app.)

maybe Richard Sherman should play he would have some entertaining psych outs for sure
