OK, this thread isn’t about what you thought it would be about, but I still need your opinion.
Let’s say you gutted your bathroom in a fit of rage because it was too pink: pink walls, pink tub, pink tile, and you want to give it a makeover. You already have picked out and bought a beautiful white pedestal sink and a Jacuzzi whirlpool bathtub. You are keeping your fairly new white toilet.
You are planning on re-finishing the built in linen cabinet, possibly painting the dark stained thing a lighter color.

[li]What would you do with the walls? Tile or paint?[/li][li]What type of flooring would you pick? Tile or vinyl?[/li][li]What colors would you choose?[/li][/ul]
i would go for a white bathroom - it would be very serene and good for bubble baths (yay jacuzzi tubs!)
walls- white paint or maybe white wallpaper with a pearlized pattern (in another shade of white, of course :))
as for the walls in the bathtub area, there are these cool handpainted tiles- you could accent the walls with them (fish, flowers, stuff- or you might be able to do your own)
floor- white ceramic tile - maybe there is some kind of glaze you can put on it to prevent mildew and dirt from getting in the grout) as for grout color, i am inclined to say white, but that would be horrible to keep clean, if such a glaze does not exist, so maybe black
you could put accent colors in with your towels and rugs- a nice blue would go well.
Go with the puce-and-purple checker pattern for the floor.
No, seriously… umm… tile looks very nice, but you have to take loads of care for it, so unless you’ve got time on your hands to scrub every other week or so. If there IS some kind of anti-mildew glaze, please, let us know…
For wall color, I would agree with Sapphire and go with white, or if you wanna be truly daring, maybe even a very light blue (blue is supposed to be mellowing, which helps for those hour-long bubble baths )
I like tiling that goes about half way up the walls. Could be small very light gray tiles and a black row at the top. Paint the rest in a light neutral colour off-white to your preference. Then choose one other colour you like for accents; this might make the difference masculine/feminine e.g… I saw a very effective bathroom where a foresty-green was the extra colour. Tiling on the floor might be cold; either way, a nice area rug that won’t disintigrate with dampness can really warm up the room.
I kind of like the white look, too, but with either a light blue or light green accent. I would not wallpaper a bathroom, unless you want to watch it peel after a year. Flat paint, maybe some stencil patterns on the wall, or just a stencil border up near the ceiling. Just a guess here, but if it was someone else’s idea to go all pink before (my friend at work just went through the exact same thing), there are some nice floral stencil patterns.
Linoleum on the floor - vinyl tiles seperate, ceramic tiles have the grout problem, and are cold. Of course, since you have already gutted, do you have hot water heat? Why not go all out with radiant heat and ceramic tiles? Of course, it’s easy for me to say, it’s not my money!
If you don’t have a shower surround, then I would tile in there with a pattern using your accent color. Maybe some nice overhead can lights above the jacuzzi, with a dimmer switch. How about wall sconces to hold candles? Nice and romantic. Don’t forget your GFCIs!!!
I like the idea of having a white bathroom with other colors used for accents. Deep blues or greens would go nicely with white.
I’d definitely use tile for the floor, if only because I have vinyl in my bathroom (at least I think that’s what it is) and the floor is peeling up at the edges.
I like Sapphire Bullet’s idea for the handpainted tiles in the shower area. You might be able to find some really cool designs.
Thanks for the great ideas! Almost makes me want to gut and re-do my downstairs bathroom too.
Enderw23–Yep, pink is out.
Sapphire Bullet–Gutting was fairly easy, messy though. I like the hand painted tiles idea!
SPOOFE–I’ll keep puce and purple checkers in mind…NOT. I like the white idea, light blue is nice.
toonerama–The former floor was ceramic tile…I put lots of rugs down!
Dire Wolf–I think I will paint most of the walls, that way if I feel like changing everything again I won’t have to rip out the tile. I really like the candle-sconce idea. And thank you for the link. It looks like a very informative site.
sk8rixtx–I am leaning towards green, haven’t made up my mind yet. I like green things.
ladybug–I will more than likely choose tile for the floor. And I think white will be it!
When you’re done with yours, can you come and do mine?
I’m still trying to figure out who thought turquoise was a good idea for fixtures (bath, throne, and sinks) and that wood tiles were a good choice for flooring (in a bathroom?).
